A unified Korea would be closely allied to the US. That's why China won't support it

“Like lips and teeth,” Mao Zedong said, in response to a question about his country’s relationship with North Korea.
Yesterday morning, the Guardian revealed that the Wikileaks cables said China was “ready to abandon North Korea.” In a separate report, the newspaper quoted Chinese diplomats as backing the revelation, saying they wanted an “independent and peaceful reunification of the Korean peninsula.”
It’s an odd claim, because the cable doesn’t say anything of the kind.
The text of the cable – a report on a conversation between Chun Yung-woo, South Korea’s Foreign Minister, and Kathleen Stephens, the US Ambassador, is this:
Describing a generational difference in Chinese attitudes toward North Korea, Chun claimed XXXXXXXXXXXX believed Korea should be unified under ROK [South Korean] control. Chun acknowledged the Ambassador’s point that a strong ROK-Japan relationship would help Tokyo accept a reunified Korean Peninsula.
I don’t have the benefit of knowing who XXXXXXXXXXXX is, but can’t for the life of me understand how the plain language of this text justifies a headline that proclaims Wikileaks cables reveal China ‘ready to abandon North Korea’. The phrase in inverted commas figures nowhere in the cable.
Paragraph 3 of the cable, suggests China is unwilling to do anything to pressure North Korea – let alone abandon it.

Maybe, maybe not. A pro-US leaning Korea, but one where no US troops are present, might look like a net win to the ChiComs.
I see real problems ahead China is experiencing food shortages, inflation and they are mad at us for devaluing the dollar. Their last sale of debt didn’t turn out too well either, I think they may want N. Korea as their ally in case conditions get too ugly with their own citizens.

FARS, here is any interesting story about a “game changing” weapon our military is beginning to use in Afghanistan, which might be of big use elsewhere?

No of course N. K wouldn’t be of any help with Food what I meant was using N. Korea as a weapon of war if the Chinese start to have too many starving people and they are mad at us for devaluing the dollar, causing inflation, etc.
I saw that weapon pretty cool it should save some of our soldiers lives.
