Pentagon: We could have shut down Wikileaks but chose not to
Hot Air ^ | DECEMBER 1, 2010 | ALLAHPUNDIT

I hope he’s telling the truth. Because if our cyberwar unit is so weak that they can’t hit a few servers in Sweden, then I, for one, welcome our new Chinese overlords. The key question: Was this decision driven chiefly by military or political concerns? Could be that the Pentagon suspects foreign powers are monitoring Wikileaks’ servers in hopes of picking up clues about U.S. cyber capabilities in case we attack. Or, it could be that The One fears a five-alarm First Amendment freakout among his base if he dares to knock down an outfit that’s dedicated to compromising U.S. foreign policy with stolen documents.

Or, just maybe, the Pentagon realized that taking down the Wikileaks site would achieve nothing since Assange would doubtless end up passing the stolen cables to newspapers anyway. If you think this incident is embarrassing for the U.S. now, imagine the humiliation involved in the Pentagon torpedoing Wikileaks and then seeing the documents turn up on page one of the Times. Sheer impotence.

Wikileaks is more than a "few servers in Sweden". They have KNOWN mirrors all over the world.

I wouldn’t waste military grade cyberwarfare on the unlikely chance you could suppress this stuff. That would just be revealing more information to the enemy about our tactics.

I read that Wiki’leeks’ is using Amazon.com servers in the US.
Sissy knows that they are safe from attack and shutdown.

The reason that the Pentagon didn't shut down Wikileaks is because ...

1) The global elites already knew all the stuff contained in the cables.
2) The only thing that changed because of the leaks is that all of this insider knowledge officially became public information.
3) If only one newspaper, website, magazine, or public interest group had gotten hold of the cables then they would still have officially become public information.

It doesn't matter how many people in the public actually find out what's in the cables. It doesn't matter how easy or difficult it is to get at the information. How it became public knowledge is of no importance. That it did, is very important.

The only important thing is how the elites relate to one another, not how they relate to us. We are mere pawns.

Wikileaks gave the documents to reporters weeks before they were released on their servers.

I read that Wiki’leeks’ is using Amazon.com servers in the US.

Amazon's EC "cloud computing" service is basically self-service. It's not likely that Amazon actually knew what was being hosted until someone informed them.

In any event, they have reportedly taking down the servers after a query from Joe Lieberman's office.

It shouldn’t be up to the Pentagon but the CIA spooks to eliminate the threat.

I'm tired of this kind of thinking. We see it in so many different ways.

Why even bother with developing these capabilities if we're afraid that using them exposes them? Are our government leaders thinking that these were just "make-work" projects, but the stuff was never intended to actually be used?

That is a little over my head, but thanks for the information.
I am just wondering, who is this helping? If our federal government wanted these leaks stopped I’m sure they could do that. So far it seems that Hillary Clinton is being hurt the most. Is this how Obama is getting rid of his opponent before 2012? Just asking?

I don’t doubt that we have the means and the knowledge to do this.

I doubt we have the will. I can easily see our military accused of censorship or worse if they went after the site.

....is using Amazon.com

Tried but, not for long.

So if it is criminal to leak...We've been there seen that how many times? The NYTimes and all other media outlets that piggy-back report the material now that it is out..that's ok. No longer a leak but a river of media information. Some secret, some not.

In the Valerie Plame secret agent identity [well their new movie is playing it up big as a true story, so start the reviews] ;)

On August 30, 2006, the New York Times reports that the lawyer and other associates of Mr. Armitage confirmed he was Novak's "initial and primary source" for Plame's identity [ wiki]. SCOTUS said go away.

We even had ...Vermont's own "Leaky Leahy". I don't remember anything, but a nickname coming out of that leak that left an Egyptian operative dead, so claimed at the time.

Heinous Sexual acts, or suggestions of homosexual activity always seem to surface against person or persons revealing secrets of government insider-insiders. (Example the Girl With The Dragon Tattoo) That's just how the spy world works in real life or fiction. Cast doubt immediately often with the use of some sexcapade sting the preferred juicy accusation of choice.

Who's to believe what the government says anymore.

Movie probably already in the works.

•We don't want to put our military "in harm's way" because somebody might get killed.

Wait till the military is as gay as the democrats want it to be.

Imagine barney frank as a general...

They'll have to get their nails done before they decide on what their "battle dress" will be. Probably a skirt and high heels...
