Sarah Palin's Mike Huckabee problem
WaPo ^ | 6:00 AM ET, 11/23/2010 | By Aaron Blake and Felicia Sonmez

Posted on 11/23/2010 8:14:30 AM PST by onyx

1. Former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee said Monday that Sarah Palin might well "run away" with the Republican nomination for president.

It's funny Huckabee should say such a thing, because he's got a lot of say over whether she does just that. And it has to do with whether he even runs in the first place.

As potential 2012 candidates weigh their prospects and determine their plans for the next presidential race, one thing is clear: that Huckabee and Palin inhabit largely the same space -- i.e. they each would perform well without the other, but they might undercut each other if they are in the same race.

There is currently a four-candidate top-tier consisting of Palin, Huckabee, former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney and former House Speaker Newt Gingrich. And indeed, a new Quinnipiac University poll on Monday showed the four of them all huddled between 15 and 19 percent of the vote.

But while Huckabee and Gingrich have pretty broad support, the base of support for Huckabee and Palin is readily apparent, and for both of them, it starts with born-again evangelicals. The two of them combine for 46 percent of that vote, compared to just 26 percent for Gingrich and Romney. Palin and Huckabee are also the top two vote-getters among women and people without college degrees.

So why is that important? Because if any of the four frontrunners seems least likely to run for president, it would be Huckabee. And, if he doesn't take the plunge, where is his 26 percent share of evangelicals going to go? Where is his 18 percent share of women going? Who gets his 17 percent share of those without college degrees?

The obvious answer to all three of those questions is Palin.

The Eastern Establishment including the DNC and RINOs are trying to get a fight going between Palin and Huckabee.

Let them destroy each other.

Another version of divide and conquer.

They are fearful of discussing issues and finding a common solution, (not compromise as they define it) but a solution that recognizes the dignity of individual, the limitations of the U.S. Constitution, and the real meaning of the freedoms defined in the Amendments.

They love freedom if they are the only group who is free.

And the rest of us as serfs living in a a society of serfdom where at the top they cannot be held accountable for their actions.

To quote some, “This is a time to try men's souls.”

Did’nt the media still get Anderson to run in 1980?

Yep, but that came later than March, 1980, and after Anderson dropped out of the GOP race.

It was also for a different reason. The media was smarter back then. They knew that Anderson running as an independent would hurt Carter far more than Reagan, which is exactly what happened. The media had developed a disdain for Carter by then.

I agree with your every word, Al B.

I am mindful of the old adage that says “politics makes for strange bedfellows.”

I could actually envision a Romney/Huckabee “political” marriage, but Huckabee’s Evangelica base would abandon him before the ink dried on the marriage licence.

The left knows that Obama would slaughter Huckabee whereas Palin could have a shot.

Enough of the idiocy. The Republican nominee, no matter who it is, is going to have a great chance of beating Obama.

Obama is a failure, ranking somewhere between Jimmy Carter and Herbert Hoover.

The problem here in Iowa is the Huckster has a large base of evangelicals who love his phony “God words”.

They have told me Sarah isn’t a good Christian because biblically she should stay home and raise her kids, not run for public office.

They want a preacher (remember, they thought Pat Roberson would be a good president) and see their vote as a test of their religious piety.

They will split the conservative vote in Iowa, Romney will win and the establishment will proclaim him the frontrunner going into New Hampshire.

Just as in 2008, the conservatives could lose by splitting their votes, and the establishment squish RINO will garner the nomination.

The lamestream drive-bys will push Huckabee, hoping he will take Sarah Palin out in Iowa and South Carolina. They figure if they can accomplish that (I don’t think they can), they are already halfway home.

They want to boil the GOP primaries down to Huck vs. Mitt. At that point suddenly an avalanche of anti-Huck articles would appear in the media and continue until Romney defeated him for the nomination.

Then they would have their ideal match up of GOP progressive vs. Dem progressive for the general election. They would then turn on Romney like a rabid dog to promote the Dem progressive (assuming it will be the Obamunist).

Who do they think they’re fooling? Well, it worked for them in the run-up to 2008. But the electorate is much wiser now.

No biggie, let Huck have Iowa and Mitt New Hampshire. Palin will take South Carolina and Florida, which is all that really matters.

FairTax also makes him unelectable in a general. It’s not good policy, but its atrocious politics. Vote for a23% tax trate and trust Congress to keep it fair. Yeah, not buying.

Remember that week or two back in ‘08 where David Brooks was praising Huckabee, as a vote splitter for his guy McCain. Same game.

I need ideas on how to stop him here in Iowa.

Seriously these dim bulbs (some in my own family) want a preacher.

I’m sure the establishment is whispering in his ear all kinds of incentives and good poll numbers, as he is their hope for derailing Palin.

Do we want them picking our candidate AGAIN?

The “Fair” tax is a ripoff of those who have scrimped, saved and invested. Heavy double taxation. It’s a crock.

Huckabee probably doesn’t have to be pushing any of this -— he’s a egotist and a political dolt. He’s flattered and smitten by the attention and he’ll happily play along, only to get blind-sided when the lamestream turns on him to promote the real loser, Romney.

Huckabee doesn’t want Sarah Palin to win, because he thinks he’s superior to her and if she can win, he thinks he can win, too.

Aw gee, is that a hint for me or for someone else to post it?

LOL.

And the people will hear about Huckabee’s “Willie Horton” problem.....The day after the government/media complex manipulates him into being our presidential nominee.
