Sarah Palin's Mike Huckabee problem
WaPo ^ | 6:00 AM ET, 11/23/2010 | By Aaron Blake and Felicia Sonmez

1. Former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee said Monday that Sarah Palin might well "run away" with the Republican nomination for president.

It's funny Huckabee should say such a thing, because he's got a lot of say over whether she does just that. And it has to do with whether he even runs in the first place.

As potential 2012 candidates weigh their prospects and determine their plans for the next presidential race, one thing is clear: that Huckabee and Palin inhabit largely the same space -- i.e. they each would perform well without the other, but they might undercut each other if they are in the same race.

There is currently a four-candidate top-tier consisting of Palin, Huckabee, former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney and former House Speaker Newt Gingrich. And indeed, a new Quinnipiac University poll on Monday showed the four of them all huddled between 15 and 19 percent of the vote.

But while Huckabee and Gingrich have pretty broad support, the base of support for Huckabee and Palin is readily apparent, and for both of them, it starts with born-again evangelicals. The two of them combine for 46 percent of that vote, compared to just 26 percent for Gingrich and Romney. Palin and Huckabee are also the top two vote-getters among women and people without college degrees.

So why is that important? Because if any of the four frontrunners seems least likely to run for president, it would be Huckabee. And, if he doesn't take the plunge, where is his 26 percent share of evangelicals going to go? Where is his 18 percent share of women going? Who gets his 17 percent share of those without college degrees?

The obvious answer to all three of those questions is Palin.

The Huckabee kid apparently started taking his agressions out on food...along with the rest of the family.

Plus, we had massive stagflation and a prolonged hostage situation. These are not easily reproducable conditions.

Huckaboo should run. He’s got nothing else to do.

That's part of the problem and a part not easy to fix. Any party which closes their primary in a manner not heretofore done could be inviting the wrath of the independents in the next general election. So neither big party wants to blink first.

Ideally, unregistered people could vote in any primary, but their votes would be tabulated separately and would count only toward bragging rights and not selecting delegates. That way, they could participate without screwing up the process.

Another part of the problem is the top-loaded primary schedule. Super Tuesday pretty much sewed it up for McCain. Some of this might have been mitigated somewhat if primaries weren't overly skewed to winner-take-all. The primaries really need to be a marathon and not a sprint.

Of “serious contenders” for the GOP nomination, Huckabee leads my “do not want” list.

LOL. Right, two dopes from Hope won’t do. Huckabee has ambition, but he’s got baggage that his grin and preacher talk can’t shed. He still says he’d pardon those two guys if he had the same information he had when he pardoned them. Sheesh.

Exactly. Huckabee can only be a spoiler or a siphon, but he would be mighty happy with VP.

They are practically negotiating in public right now.

That's how it strikes me, too!

Huckabee is a scam artist politician who is trying to parlay his NYC media show into connections cozy with the MSM

Right!!

Not Romney? Huckabee leads your do not want list?
Romney is totally unacceptable to me. He’s repulsive.
Huckabee is almost completely off my list.

unctuous smarm

Perfect.

You're right, it is a specialization. I cannot begin to grasp the logic or nature of the appeal, thoug. I suppose that, like slug slime, it's an acquired taste.

The vitriol that Huckster aimed at Mitt during the last primary cycle was waaaay beyond the pale. It was disgusting.

I don’t like either one of them.

I am not Mormon- nor Baptist.

No matter what—Huckster isn’t Presidential material.,

We already learned not to have a person who thrives on VINDICTIVE in the Oval Office.

Look long & hard at Mike Pence. Sarah. Eric Cantor & others.

Not that I give Q polls any credence, but that shows that the largest portion of the polled voters don't want any of the four "front runners".

Count me in there. I don't anything to do with any of these four.

No it wasn't, I don't recall any big thing directed at Mitt "the compulsive liar" Romney.

No problem.

Lots of people seem to want to believe the best about Huckabee, and they don't seem to want to know the facts if they run contrary to what they assume to be the case about him.

But Free Republic is where to go for insight and commentary on the suitability of conservative candidates.

Huckabee isn't suitable and he isn't conservative.

Huckabee is going to run as a professional vote splitter.

He didn't cause any problems last time, Fred was not going to make it for long, with or without Huckabee.

I don’t get that reasoning about 2008, the only guy that could be mad at Huckabee for 2008 would be Mitt Romney.

****

Have you already forgotten the one candidate who could have actually won in 2008? FRED!!

Fred Thompson despises Huckabee.

Huckabee was the prime beneficiary of the James Dobson authored "Fred's not a real Christian" misinformation that torpedoed Thompson's candidacy among many evangelicals.
