A Reply to Mona Charen’s "Why Sarah Palin Shouldn’t Run"
Human Events ^ | 11/21/10 | Jedediah Bila

In a National Review Online column on November 19, Mona Charen provided an explanation of why she believes Sarah Palin shouldn’t run for President. She argued that after the 2008 campaign, Palin “quit her job as governor after two and a half years…and seemed to chase money and empty celebrity.” She asserted that “Palin seems consumed and obsessed” by the media, labeled Palin’s new TLC show, Sarah Palin’s Alaska, a “cheesy entrant in the reality-show genre,” and took issue with the fact that Sarah and Todd sit in the Dancing with the Stars audience “cheering on their unwed-mother daughter.” She opined that Palin’s “endorsement of Christine O’Donnell was irresponsible and damaging” and suggested that “She would be terrific as a talk-show host — the new Oprah.”

First and foremost, let’s address one of Charen’s opening points as to why Palin should sit 2012 out. She stated, “Americans will be looking for sober competence, managerial skill, and maturity — not sizzle and flash.” Perhaps a walk down policy lane is in order.

As Governor, Sarah Palin actualized AGIA, the Alaska Gasline Inducement Act, the largest private sector infrastructure project in North American history. Palin’s administration opened up drilling for oil and gas at Point Thomson for the first time in several decades. As Governor, Palin reduced earmark requests for Alaska by 80%, established Alaska’s Petroleum Integrity Office to oversee safe energy development, placed the state checkbook online, and reduced spending for Fiscal Year 2010 by over one billion dollars from Governor Murkowski’s Fiscal Year 2007 budget. Palin signed ACES, Alaska’s Clear and Equitable Share bill, into law, incentivizing development and ensuring that Alaskans would receive a “clear and equitable” share of oil profits.

You know, I'm getting SO SICK of hearing people calling Governor Palin "a quitter." For some reason, I haven't heard anyone calling Obama or Hillary! "quitters," even though neither actually completed their elective terms as senators. And didn't Hillary! promise that she would complete her term, and shortly thereafter go on the presidential campaign trail?

She has two babies in the house. One "special needs". If she was a full-time governor, like that skank in Massachussettes awhile back, she'd be a "quitter". I'm not a Palinite in any way, but anyone who calls her a "quitter" is an anti-family statist who thinks political power is more important than being a Mom. Alas, the GOP is as full of those monsters as the Dems.

I am a big fan of Sarah’s. I attended many of her rallies in 08 in Pa and Oh. I met some great people there and enjoyed them all. However,

You sound like thoe seminar callers who get into Rush's show and start by saying,
"Ditto's Rush, I listen to you everyday, and I have voted republican my whole life, BUUUUUUT!
What is it about you people that you cannot just start by saying what you think? Why is it you feel the need to stress your credentials before you go on the attack? All it does is give away your true nature. You are a Rino, and you think that Sarah is an idiot.

If you were old enough to vote in 1979, you said the same thing about Ronald Reagan. If you were not old enough then you probably think we should give up on expecting another Ronald type conservative to come along.

I guess the parents are supposed to stop loving their child after she screws up huh? hey does Gore still love his drugged out son or any of the presidents who have kids that embarrassed them while they were in office? She will never be taken seriously by many people in this country. I think we need a new face who wasn’t involved in 08 at all. There has to be a person out there with her beliefs and character without the baggage.

Another "I love Sarah, but" post.

How original.

re: with her beliefs and character without the baggage

The MSM/Leftie cabal will see to it that anyone who is chosen will have lots of baggage by election day. With Sarah it's all old news and will be even older by Nov. 2012. I'm sure they other side is hoping against hope that we will panic and dump Sarah for a new face. A new face that they can delight in smearing with all new charges from now until the election. Barring something completely new turning up there's not much they can say about Sarah that hasn't already been said, over and over. I think she can hold her own, especially against charges that are yesterday's news.

There's a given percentage of the voters who would not vote for her under any circumstances, then there's those who would vote for her regardless. Between them is that vast gulf of ‘moderates’ who decide most contests. I think many of them will be very tired of of the same old hogwash about Sarah and might even begin to take her side against those who keep harping on the same ol’ same ol’.

Well said. And who does that person think should be put in the race? An unvetted unknown? By the time the election gets here, Sarah will be be every bit as viable a candidate as Reagan was. Not to say she is the second coming, just to say as viable a candidate. Then......the second coming.

There has to be a person out there with her beliefs and character without the baggage.

"Baggage"? What baggage? I challenge you to name another contender for the 2012 nomination who is more squeaky clean than Sarah Palin.

By "baggage", you can only be referring to all of the lies and manufactured controversies of the left-wing/RINO MSM. Sarah herself has never done anything in her political career, or her public life that a rational person would define as "baggage".

If you fail to support the one person in our camp who actually has the experience, the courage, and the determination to take this country back to where it ought to be, simply because the MSM and the RINOs are telling you to do so, then that's just weak.

America hasn't seen a leader of Sarah Palin's caliber since at least the time of Reagan. We need to get behind her and push - not shrink back because the traitorous left doesn't like her.

Sarah's family responsibilities were only peripheral to her decision to leave the governor's office. Central to that decision were a never ending string of BS ethic lawsuits to tie up her time, money and divert attention from the responsibilities of acting as governor.

Given 20-20 hindsight, she not only made a logical decision, but the only logical decision.

She and Barbara make quite a pair at trashing Sarah and putting down DWTS fans.

Her column is toast to me now.
