Perry: Take TSA patters and put them on border security detail By Bridget Johnson - 11/20/10 09:49 AM ET
The incoming chairman of the Republican Governors Association suggested Friday that TSA screeners would be more help securing the nation's border with Mexico.
Texas Gov. Rick Perry said Friday on Fox Business Network that states need to "push Washington back into that box that we call the United States constitution," but said the federal government needs to follow through on its responsibility of securing the U.S. border.
"Just in the last two weeks, I've had five of my citizens who've lost their lives on that border with Mexico, and that is an irresponsible lack of focus by our federal government," Perry said, calling the federal security an "abject failure."
When asked if, in the wake of the TSA invasive pat-down controversy, he'd replace TSA screeners as states are allowed under federal law, Perry had an idea.
"How about we take all those TSA agents and put them on the border with Mexico where they can do some security there?" Perry said. "That's where we need security substantially more than in our airports and what we're seeing out of this bunch."
Perry cautioned that the incoming lawmakers in the 112th Congress "better be dreaming about" cutting the size of government and embracing fiscal conservatism when they go to sleep at night and focus on it every waking day.
"That's the type of individual that will be rewarded by the voters with a re-election," he said.
The possible presidential contender said that will also be the hallmark of a successful nominee.
"I'd like to find somebody with the characteristics will stand up and run for the presidency in 2012 and say, I want to go to Washington, D.C. and help you make Washington as inconsequential in your life as I can make it," he said.
Perry didn't say whether he was that person, but said he had "the best job" as governor of the Lone Star State. "I want to be back in the state being a governor and making things happen," he said.
I kinda like the guy...sort of a combo of George Bush "ranch ruggedness" and as good looking [unfortunately that counts big in elections] as Mitt.
He just might turn out to be better than both - and electable!
Good gosh! I hadn’t thought of Hightower in years. Wonder whatever happened to that scrawny piece of elitist trash..........
He had a talk radio show in the Peoples Republic of Austin. I saw a book of his featured in a glass case at Threadgill's in Austin.
No thanks! TSA employees are not the type of individules I want securing our border.
Long time = approx. 2 years. Bush sure as heck looked the part, and much of the time displayed Presidential character.
My comment on Rick Perry is that he might not be the ideal we Conservatives want, but has the "TX ranch ruggedness" of Bush, the good looks of Mitt - just might be beter than either.....and, more importantly, Electable.
But there a lot of other pretty good choices out there...we will know in about a year how it's shaking out. Rove said that its is unusual for there to be no clear front runner for the RePubbie nomination at this point in Presidental nomination cycle. No one has a clear advantage according tgo the polls.
It's such a pity that a beautiful city like Austin is run by wild-eyed liberals--but what can I say.........LOL!
But it should make packing most of the state's white leftists into one congressional district rather easy.
One of the problems I have with Perry is I fear that he’s kind of like Huckabee, looks good on the outside but is a closet statist. Perry was all for mandating that girls had to have the Gardasil vaccination as a condition of attending school. Google “Rick Perry Gardasil” and you’ll easily find all the info.
Girls are not going to go to school and get cervical cancer. He insisted it had to be done to save them from cancer. This isn’t any different from liberals mandating other things they think are in our best interests. It is not a liberty-centered way of thinking.
Well—there is that—but we are also being invaded by the Meskins, who all vote dim of course, whether legal or not, and we have a huge influx around here from California and the NE. My fear is that they will soon turn us into a blue state.....
Are you kidding? Perry would get killed by Obama.
Great Post.
Will save for reference. Everyone should share these facts with those who claim there ‘are just too many illegals to deport’.
If it took Eisenhower two years to deport 13 million illegal Mexicans, then it should take no more than 4 years to deport the 20 million plus illegals we have here now.

What exactly do you expect for airport security?
Would you do away with all inspections, luggage x-ray, metal detectors ... and allow the average person to just board the aircraft (except for those who meet the PROFILE)?
Or, when you say PROFILE do you mean security similar to what Israel has at their airport in Tel Aviv?
Put a coyote in his path, turn on the cameras, and secede!
I like the way you think. Now what we need is a Conservative Speaker, not Straus.
Israel has security and profiles
Yes they do, and you have absolutely no clue what they do.
That kind of entertainment is worth the price.
Yeah, but a tour for the TSA down there would help fight America's 'obesity problem'.
