A mysterious smoke plume that looked like a missile firing off the California coast on Monday may have been an aircraft and not a missile, U.S. military officials said.

Who here didn’t think the govt would feed us a line of BS?
Jet plume? What jet plume? I don’t see no stinkin jet plume! Carry on! Nothing to see here!
Bill Gertz is pushing this crapolia?
Something big is up, and heavy hitters do not want to let the cat out of the bag. IMHO
Is Balloon Boy’s dad accounted for?
Everyone watch the original video before its pulled.

Bwahaha. The video clearly shows a missle launch, but don’t believe yer lyin’ eyes!
I guess I watch too much TV, but don’t we have things like radar and flight paths that track aircraft??? Is our military so screwed up they can’t check the time and path of aircraft? Or missles? I’ve seen shows that have copies of radar plots from the 50’s. I wasn’t too concerned about this at first, but the longer it goes on without a believeable answer, the worse it seems.
Well, it could be an airplane, provided the airplane took off from underwater and shot straight up into the air.
Weather balloon!
I have watched that video a couple of times. The problem is that we only have the one angle, compounded with the shifting light conditions at the time and the fact that it was filmed from a helicopter. Would be much easier to tell if there was a shot from another angle.
I’m a private pilot and a long term watcher of rocket launches in SoCal. Lived here my whole life. Seen everything.
It is very likely it was a contrail backlit and from seen from the right angles. Sometimes they can be quite stunning and linger for hours as well out here.
There will be radar records of what aircraft were in that area at the right time too.
From the right perspective and conditions, it is totally acceptable explaination.
I saw it off the CBS site earlier and the rocket burn light/fire signature is even more apparent on that version of the video.
It is hard to imagine how a contrail has a rocket tail burn appearing as it rolls off vertical.
But, hey, we are just the milk cows — keep working ‘til the 5:00 whistle.
Maybe the Flying Nun? ;-)
I have seen that tape 4 times. Damn fast airplane & putting out lots of contrail—more than I have ever seen before & I live near the Fallon NAS.
The ICBM was probably Russia having some fun while the Kenyan was off in Bollywood. The missile’s payload probably hit the Kura Test Range in Kamchatka Krai, Russia.
And if it was an aircraft, it would need to have been having a flame-out situation in an engine(s) as well, since the video clearly shows what looks quite like the flames from a rocket exhaust.
If you watch the speed of the vehicle and the size of the thrust plume there is no plane in services in the USA that fits that profile.
It has to be a missile.
If that’s a jet contrail that pilot needs to be grounded for flying while intoxicated.
