In an interview with "60 Minutes" on CBS News, his first since the Democratic drubbing in last Tuesday's mid-terms elections, Mr Obama said that he sometimes gets "discouraged" about the poor economy but realised that it was not entirely his fault.
"There are times when I thought that the economy would have gotten better by now," he said. "You know, one of the things I think you understand as president is you're held responsible for everything, but you don't always have control of everything, right?"
He insisted he was not worried about another depression or recession but the unemployment rate, stuck at just below 10 per cent, was a major concern.
"What is a danger is that we stay stuck in a new normal where unemployment rates stay high, people who have jobs see their incomes go up, businesses make big profits, but they've learned to do more with less, and so they don't hire," he said.
"And as a consequence, we keep on seeing growth that is just too slow to bring back the eight million jobs that were lost. That is a danger. So that's something that I spend a lot of time thinking about."
Mr Obama resisted expressing regrets about any policy decisions he had made but spoke with the same tone of contrition he exhibited in his White House press conference last Wednesday. He suggested his focus on good policy had carried a political price.
"We were so busy and so focused on getting a bunch of stuff done that we stopped paying attention to the fact that, yeah, leadership isn't just legislation, that it's a matter of persuading people and giving them confidence and bringing them together, and setting a tone....

So in other words...no hope and change?
“Unemployment as normal” will be an expression associated only with Obama and the rest of the deluded Progressives.
He warned us. We knew what we were getting but 53% of those who bothered voting still gave this guy the keys.
Hope you unemployed obama supporters out there took note. This is where he has brought you. From 4% before the democrats took over the house and senate to today where the real unadjusted rate is around 20%. He just made it very clear that you just need to accept the fact that his policies brought you to this and this is where you damned well better be happy existing, and dependent on his largesse and whims. Truly idiot voters.
FUBO & FAD
Obama is an economic ignorant
Like when BiteMe promised 500,000 jobs EVERY MONTH during the Bummer of Recovery?
combine that ‘new normal’ with unlimited UI extensions and we’ll soon get the ‘new welfare.’
“You know, one of the things I think you understand as president is you’re held responsible for everything, but you don’t always have control of everything, right?”
So I guess that means that Bush wasn’t responsible for any of the economy you “inherited” because he didn’t have control.
Thanks O for clarifying that for us!
Here are some ideas for President Obama on how to reduce unemployment from one of the ‘great unwashed hillbilles in the middle of the country’:
1) Cut spending across the board.Period
2) Reform the tax code—Flat or Fair...who cares which but stop punishing the successful and making small business owners lives hell.
3) Neuter the EPA-—CO2 is not a crime; but the whole global warming scam sure is.
4) get rid of the H1b program....why the HELL are we importing IT workers when unemployment is at 10%
5) Hey!!! How about enforcing the Immigration laws in the USA...We have enough problems of our own.
JMO...
“You know, one of the things I think you understand as president is you’re held responsible for everything, but you don’t always have control of everything, right?”
Thanks, I was really in need of a teachable moment.
Prosperity has a good chance of returning if the new Republicans do what the citizens want them to do.
0bama better not DARE to claim credit for it.
Talk of waste of human resources....
No AND.
Just change. Changing Unemployment to ‘normal’.
It having dawned on Obama that socialism destroys prosperity, he nonetheless will stay the course.
So......... if Obama wants to be ‘normal’, he needs to be unemployed.
Even if he was right, and he’s not, the most hurt will be those lacking skills and experience. Mostly because the high cost of hiring and employing imposed by government.
But if he really thinks we are in recovery then he is really dense.
