U.S. President Barack Obama endorsed on Monday India's long-held demand for a permanent seat on the U.N. Security Council, a largely symbolic move that may put diplomatic pressure on rival regional power China.
India says a seat on the council would reflect the growing weight of the G20 nation as its trillion dollar economy helps spur global growth and its government exerts more and more influence over issues from Doha trade to climate change talks.
"In the years ahead, I look forward to a reformed United Nations Security Council that includes India as a permanent member," Obama said in a speech to India's parliament in New Delhi.
"Let me suggest that with increased power comes increased responsibility," he added at the end of the first leg of a 10-day Asian tour that has also been seen about gathering support from countries like India to exert pressure on China on its currency.
Ben Rhodes, White House deputy national security adviser, told a news conference ahead of Obama's speech that "this was a full endorsement" for India's permanent membership of a reformed Security Council.
It could still be a pipe dream and likely face resistance from some countries reluctant to water down the power of the five permanent members -- Britain, China, France, Russia and the United States.
But it is probably Obama's most headline-grabbing announcement on his first official visit to the world's largest democracy that has seen the U.S. leader seeks greater trade with India's massive markets as well as to help counterbalance the rise of China.
The U.N. Security Council has since the body's inception had five permanent members with the power to veto resolutions. It has been criticised for not reflecting global power in the 21st century.

UN = Government Mafia
The media pounds into our brains that India is the worlds largest democracy.
India is just another marxist regime which had been subverted by the Soviets decades ago...
First it dilutes our vote on the Security Council to admit any new permanent members. Second, India has opposed US foreign policy throughout most of their history and one love fest between BJP and Bush doesn't guarantee that's over. And third, this will seriously piss off the Germans who Condi Rice broke the bad news to just a couple of years back.
There are some communist elements in India. However, there is also a very strong anti-communist element there. If we do not engage India, they will slip into the Russian and even Chinese orbits.
Obama has already sucked up to Brazil with a $10 billion investment in their oil drilling industry (and a follow-up moratorium in the US to cut the world competition) and now is sucking up to India. My prediction is that he is making “friends” in the UN for an ultimate run for Secretary General. He’s been pushing for greater authority for the UN and as SG will truly be “King of the World”.
Obama, Bernake, and the rest of the US Debt crew are using India as leverage against China to force them to buy more U.S. T-Bills.
So, is Obama going to suggest that, since Britain and France can share an aircraft carrier, they can also share a UN Security Council permanent seat?
The UNSC is an increasingly meaningless organisation since folks like China and Russia hold a veto. Besides all talk of US/Russian/British support for Germany, India and Japan have been vague on veto powers.
“In the years ahead, I look forward to a reformed United Islamic Nations Security Council that includes India as a permanent member,”.
I’m sure you’ve spent plenty of time in India to come to that conclusion.
It makes more sense than having France as a permanent member.
No, I am just immune to the Soviet tactic of subversion...
UN= World Communists thought everyone knew that..
Well unfortunately, most major world governments including those of Western European countries and US don’t appear to have that level of immunity.
Is that why the USA dod nothing to continue Canada’s seat on the Security Council?
Canada has been on the council since the UN was formed.
NObama & our UN ambasador did absolutely NOTHING to keep them there.
Selling out our nearest neighbor, with the longest border attached to the USA doesn’t seem very smart to me.
This is India’s chance, we are going to use India as a hedge against China.
If they seized the opportunity and absorb as much technology as they can from us, then they could become another China in 20 years.
Well, the Indians have been buying Russkie military hardware for a long time.
China is more of an immediate threat to India than anybody else in the world.
However, my take on Obama’s sudden conversion to free trade is that the Russkies have called in a favor from Obama. The ploy is that the USA will transfer advanced aerospace tech to India which will magically appear in the next generation of Russkie weapons systems.
