Rep. Steve Kagen (D-Wis.): 'Turnout isn't where we need it to be'

Rep. Steve Kagen's (D-Wis.) campaign manager e-mailed supporters to warn them that turnout numbers were flagging and that they needed more voters to make their way to the polls.

"We have just been going over the morning voting numbers — and turnout isn’t where we need it to be in our strong areas," campaign manager Julie Heun wrote in an e-mail. "This race is going to be a squeaker — and every vote will count."

First Coons sends a S.O.S. about low Dem turnout (and also claiming voter intimidation), now Steve Kagen says the same.

This is no coincidence. We have seen this M.O. before on election day: Dems setting up for legal fights in close races.

The Gallup enthusiasm gap poll of +19 GOP that was released today seems to be bearing out.

Is today a Superwave election? Dems appear to be in real trouble.

Not so sure these reports aren’t just a strategy to try to get a more decisive win for the dem candidate. To get more people to the polls. I don’t trust this to be true.

Voting slowing down in Cuyahoga County; 410,000 ballots expected

The director of the Cuyahoga County Board of Elections has lowered her expectations for voter turnout in the county for this midterm election.

Director Jane Platten said that based on the number of votes cast by 2 p.m., she only expects closer to 410,000 ballots by the time the polls close at 7:30 p.m. Earlier, she predicted more than 430,000 of the county's 978,268 registered voters would turn out.

But by 2 p.m. today, only 10.5 percent of the voters had been heard from. Between 42 and 44 percent of the 205,000 absentee ballots had been returned

I think Kagen is right to think that low turnout is bad news for Democrats. If so, that means only the most enthusiastic voters (i.e, Republicans and right-leaning independents)are going to the polls.
