A Sea of Broken Glass
LonePalm | 11/2/2010 | LonePalm

Posted on 11/02/2010 8:14:41 AM PDT by LonePalm

Back in October of 2000, in my first post on Free Republic, I coined the term "Broken Glass Republican" as an indication of my determination to vote against the Democrats for their mishandling of the USS Cole incident.

The term was picked up by Byron York who got it from his sister, a FReeper, over dinner and published in National Review. Peggy Noonan then used it in her article The Meaning of the Vote Democracy is a blessing--especially for "Broken Glass Republicans". It was also used repeatedly by Rush on the air. Attaching "Broken Glass" to some group name has become a reference to the intensity of that group's dedication.

I have been seeing reports of high voter turnout this morning and think that this will help us rather than hurt us.

I live in the NJ-6 congressional district. My congresscritter is Frank Pallone, a member of the House Progressive Caucus and one of the authors of 0bamacare.

As a purely anecdotal bit of evidence, I have noticed a much larger number of signs for Anna Little than Frank Pallone. Until very recently, I had not seen a single Pallone sign in a person's yard while most of the Little signs had been in people's yards.

Sunday, I saw a Pallone TV ad. The ad vilely misrepresented Little's positions and did nothing to portray Pallone positively.

This district is heavily Gerrymandered to keep Pallone in office. It is a long narrow district that is less than 200 yards wide at one point. The fact that Frank Pallone thinks he needs to run TV ads attacking Anna Little is illustrative of how much trouble the Democrats are in.

The usual adjectives, Tsunami, Teanami, Earthquake, etc. are likely to prove woefully in adequate to describe the results of today's election.

Get out and vote y'all. Better still take someone else with you that will do the right thing and throw the Dems out.

Let's make this a political Kristallnacht for the liberals.

Today we take the garbage out.

Of course ABC radio news helpfully reminds us that a democrat ass-kicking doesn't necessarily mean republicans have a mandate to change washington DC in their own image... LOL.

I was surprised to see some online ads for (WA Sen) Patty Murray attacking challenger Dino Rossi. A LOT of money has been flowing into Patsy’s (so-called for her defense of the stainmeister) campaign. But precious few yard signs.

Best wishes, for NJ-6, LonePalm.

I was a “Broken Glass” Republican until shortly after the 2000 census, when my congressional distriict was redrawn (Sherrod Brown was my congressman).

It feels good to have the representation you want. :-)

To be considered in addition to the unprecidented 15 point generic ballot lead of the republicans - and that is the substantially higher enthusiasm lead by republicans/independents in contrast to the demonrats.

Here they are expecting record turnout - if the enthusiasm lead holds, boxer and brown are out on the street where they belong.

So you're the one! Good for you. I was telling everyone that I cheerfully crawl over broken glass to get to the polls. I got to the polls 20 minutes early so I could be voter #1. They open all the doors and compartments of the ballot box, and voter #1 certifies that it is empty and voting can begin. Aux barricades!

How funny...driving to the polling place in Mongtgomery County, MD (moved from Morris County, NJ earlier this year) this morning, I was thinking how odd it was that I'd hadn't heard the term "Broken Glass Republican" this election!

Well, now my day's complete...

Most Freepers are the same but they just do not know it. The term "Liberal" has been stood on its head. The classic Jeffersonian Liberal has the same beliefs as most Freepers.

I'm hoping for "cataclysmic." Perhaps "epochal."

Being a Republican means going after symbolic things like flag burning amendments. Going after gay marriage. Swarming the streets with cops possessing wide discretionary powers and a code book so large it can’t possibly fit into the back of a squad car.

It means a powerful Federal government and weak States. It means income tax and DOT, EPA, good responsible government.

I am not a Republican. Fortunately, the Republican party at times is home to people more aligned to my views than the Democrats. (I have never voted for a Democrat in my life).

But you are correct, most “conservatives” don’t know what that means. Define conservative and you will get into a huge argument. Law and Order conservatives. Fiscal Conservatives. Social Conservatives. Most of those types want to cram laws down your throat to get what they want. My favorite silliness being the flag burning Amendment.

How do you know you were the first? (I’ve often thought I had coined terms to find out I wasn’t the first).
