A majority of active-duty and reserve service members surveyed by the Defense Department would not object to serving and living alongside openly gay troops, according to multiple people familiar with the findings.
The survey's results are expected to be included in a Pentagon report, due to President Obama on Dec. 1, regarding how the military would end enforcement of the "don't ask, don't tell" law that bans openly gay men and lesbians from serving in uniform.
Some troops surveyed - but not a majority - objected strongly to the idea of serving with gays and said they would quit the military if the policy changed, said the sources, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to publicly share details of the survey.
Defense Department officials did not respond to requests for comment.
NBC News first reported Thursday evening on the survey's findings.
In July, the Pentagon sent a survey with dozens of questions to 400,000 active-duty and reserve troops. It asked whether they had ever shared a room or the showers with gay peers, and how they might act if a gay service member lived with a same-sex partner on base.
Military officials did not say how many troops completed the survey, but at least 103,000 had done so just days before it was due, according to the Pentagon. A similar survey was later sent to military spouses.

Not sure if he’s paid or not, but I suspect you’re right that he’s a troll.
I have a suspicion that most trolls are paid professionals.
And aggressiveness is a *bad* thing? This is the military we're talking about, not the church quilting circle... right?
Just sayin' is all... :~)
So that leaves about a few thousand persons from each state to serve in the military.
Sorry, but the human condition is a lot less than perfect. I like the goal however.
Maybe on some sites, but I’ve known too many people under 25 who troll just to start a fight. I suspect that this may be the case here. If he comes back with nothing but talking points, he’s paid. If he gets mad and starts in on the personal attacks, he’s under 25 and just trolling for fun.
Nothing, unless you're more concerned that everyone know you are a "gay" serviceman/woman rather than just a serviceman. I think it shows where your real commitment lies.
Unfortunately, I can't take you seriously since you threw out the race=sexuality canard in another post. At that point, in my eyes, you lost your credibility.
Military policy is not determined by referendum, so the question is moot.
My wife never received a survey. It was one piece of junk mail we wanted to get.
Most of those things is addressed in the UCMJ now as well as homosexuality - not tolerated.
Israel barely held their own in the last little clash in Lebanon and are a far cry from the past.
High moral behavior is something you agree with? I ain’t buying it bub. If that were the case, why would you want moral degenerates in the service with you? You do realize that that is what homosexuals are, don’t you?
This is just the media setting the stage for Obama to repeal DADT in the lame duck session..
Israel barely held their own in the last little clash in Lebanon (okay, I am exaggerating a little) and are a far cry from the past.
IMHO the drill sergeants need to weed out the unprofessional and uncommitted, as well as the unintelligent candidates in Basic Training.
I know that right now they kick out about 20% during basic due to personality/charicter flaws. I trust the ones giving basic training to spot what will not serve us well as a country. Gay, straight, or otherwise. No political agendas, just pure talent.
I think we get that. And the paid trolls are out in force too.
Could be. But it also shows that most of the soldiers with their perspectives and priorities in order will not fall into quivering hysterical fits because of this inevitability. Good for us.
Paid troll, nothing more. Do you work for the DNC or WaPo?
The two trolls on this thread are pros, they say that DADT is no big deal then they go on and on. Post after post of talking points.
Nothing profound, just that you may be right.
You have said all that needs to be said about the subject.
