A majority of active-duty and reserve service members surveyed by the Defense Department would not object to serving and living alongside openly gay troops, according to multiple people familiar with the findings.
The survey's results are expected to be included in a Pentagon report, due to President Obama on Dec. 1, regarding how the military would end enforcement of the "don't ask, don't tell" law that bans openly gay men and lesbians from serving in uniform.
Some troops surveyed - but not a majority - objected strongly to the idea of serving with gays and said they would quit the military if the policy changed, said the sources, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to publicly share details of the survey.
Defense Department officials did not respond to requests for comment.
NBC News first reported Thursday evening on the survey's findings.
In July, the Pentagon sent a survey with dozens of questions to 400,000 active-duty and reserve troops. It asked whether they had ever shared a room or the showers with gay peers, and how they might act if a gay service member lived with a same-sex partner on base.
Military officials did not say how many troops completed the survey, but at least 103,000 had done so just days before it was due, according to the Pentagon. A similar survey was later sent to military spouses.

If I’m in battle, sure I want God on my side. But something tells me that when ammo needs to be run to supply the front line, God can’t get it done. God made the person with the courage and selfless will to save his comrades at peril. Something tells me that God would defer his rank for the moment at hand, instead blessing me with the will of a hero, regardless of their gender preference when expressing their sexuality. Which by the way has no place on the battlefield no matter how straight or queer you are.
I never said that........But say as you will.
You might be gay, sorry if I offended you.
How much is WaPo paying you to post on Free Republic?
I don’t know if this poll bears any relation to reality but I can say this - our military ain’t no place for social experimentation!
That response sounds like something out of the gay agenda handbook. Your special 'friend' help with that response? You must have been a big disappointment to your parents.
Holy Shiite I agree with you. Mark the date.
And nothing you can say offends me. It's ok.
Big difference. In Israel, all males (and maybe females, too, I'm not sure) are REQUIRED to serve. I was told this by our Palestinian tour guide when my husband and I visited Israel in 2007.
We also gladly accept the idea of inter-racial marriage in society.
That aughta get a few more skinny minds on the hate bus.
Is there really a gay agenda handbook? Wouldn’t that be self defeating? A secret handshake maybe? Perhaps it’s a way you tie your shoes?
More like a majority of active-duty and reserve service members did not trust that they would not be subject to reprisal for giving a politically-incorrect answer to a DoD survey.
The problem with your premise is that you are under the naive illusion that openly gay military personnel are first and foremost committed soldiers.
I wouldn't want to have to put my trust into someone who's priority is for the world to know their sexual preference. There's an agenda here, and it ain't the defense of the nation.
Does WaPo pay their trolls a lot?
If this is what you truly believe about God, then you are hopelessly lost. If this is what the majority of the military believes, then the military is lost. If this is what our Country has begun to believe, then we as a nation are lost.
I’ve seen comments and thoughts exactly like yours in more than one place and they seem fairly common among most of the current generation of people in the service. I am afraid that Fred Phelps may be our modern day Balaam when he says the things that he does.
There’s no doubt that Phelps is a false prophet, but what if what he’s saying in this instance is true? What if we’re under a curse because we, as a nation, turned our backs on the truth? I’ve heard other, well respected, preachers saying the same things; saying that God has turned away from us and is turning us over to judgment for our sins. What if this is true? I have no doubt that individually we haven’t been abandoned, but I wonder if Psalms 9:17 isn’t being put into action on a national scale. After all, we’re not Israel and we don’t have the promise of survival if we turn our backs on Him.
Thoughts?
That troll is a paid operative.
They are lying about an outcome they invented.
If they are not the above, get em out of my unit.
I'm confused though.......What does sexuality have to do with being committed or professional?
The nature of the military MUST be high moral behavior!
“...skinny minds on the hate bus”?
So if God calls something evil, but you call it good, who’s right? Does it even register with you that you’re not fighting against man, but man’s Creator? The One who can destroy not only body, but soul also? The One who must swear by His own name, because there is none higher?
Does that even begin to register with you? That you are fighting against something that regards your wisdom as pure foolishness and man’s knowledge as folly?
In short, what’s wrong with you?
Because laying in a ditch with someone who you know does the most despicable things is disgusting. If you do have to lay down you life for someone it helps that you have a little respect for that person as a normal human being and worth the sacrifice. Their blood may be red but there is a high probability it might be HIV +. An annual physical isn't going to cut it. They'll have to test blood weekly.
