A majority of active-duty and reserve service members surveyed by the Defense Department would not object to serving and living alongside openly gay troops, according to multiple people familiar with the findings.
The survey's results are expected to be included in a Pentagon report, due to President Obama on Dec. 1, regarding how the military would end enforcement of the "don't ask, don't tell" law that bans openly gay men and lesbians from serving in uniform.
Some troops surveyed - but not a majority - objected strongly to the idea of serving with gays and said they would quit the military if the policy changed, said the sources, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to publicly share details of the survey.
Defense Department officials did not respond to requests for comment.
NBC News first reported Thursday evening on the survey's findings.
In July, the Pentagon sent a survey with dozens of questions to 400,000 active-duty and reserve troops. It asked whether they had ever shared a room or the showers with gay peers, and how they might act if a gay service member lived with a same-sex partner on base.
Military officials did not say how many troops completed the survey, but at least 103,000 had done so just days before it was due, according to the Pentagon. A similar survey was later sent to military spouses.

If there is to be a war, let it begin here.
First the Pink Hand destroyed the Democrat party. Then the Pink Hand destroyed the Catholic church. It has taken over Hollywood and television. It has destroyed everything it touches. Now the Pink Hand will destroy the US military. No big deal? You're an idiot for saying that.
The queer agenda marches on. I've had enough!
“If the bag o skin next to me can shoot straight and has a good head on their shoulders, I really don’t care much about the rest.”
I changed my mind, and decided to NOT respond to that self written joke.
Israel didn’t look so effective in 2006 when they went up against Hezbollah in Lebanon. They were being run from the top down by swishers and cropped hair lesbo butch bull dykes at the time like Zippi Lippi and Olmerde. Affirmation and promotion of homosex is closely akin to PAGANISM my friend and the Lord God of Israel has come down hard on His People every time they have turned from him and begun sacrificing in the high places again. Why would we think it would be any different this time. Homosexualizm has not helped the dutch any nor any other military. It breaks down discipline. Ideally, there would be no sexual behavior in the ranks.
Yeah. I can just imagine how this “survey” was taken—if it actually WAS taken.
The General calls the Colonel and the message goes down the various ranks: “This is the answer we want.”
Then the Lieutenant walks into the barracks during inspection and says, “OK, which of you guys want gays in the military, and which of you would prefer to be on KP duty for the next couple of months?”
The answer is predictable.
Thank him for his service for me...I am retired Air Force.
What we are seeing is the Administration ginning up a phony survey to justify getting rid of a band against homos from openly serving.
Once we get lulled to turn our Military in to a full time social program we will no longer be able to defend ourselves.
They probably only polled Women in the Service
I’m an Army vet. You have no idea how disgusting it is to share the barracks with a bunch of lesbians. They are just as “in your face,” and aggressive as the men.
I wouldn’t count on the women’s vote.
I’m a woman, served ‘74 to ‘77.
The whole debate seems to have an unimportant factor as far as I’m concerned. If the ‘bag o skin next to me’ can ‘shoot straight’ and has a ‘good head’ on their shoulders, I really don’t care much about the rest.
We hear ya’.
WaPo BS
Why don’t they repeat the poll and ask:
“Would you mind serving under a gay officer?”
“Would you mind serving under a gay officer who is responsible for your duties, promotions and life?”
Yep!
translation: most service members would not tell a surveyor from the Pentagon (with members of the base or ship Brass looking over their shoulders) that they had a problem with gays.
I know how sailors used to be and they couldn’t stomach being around someone they even slightly suspected might have considered being gay at one time.
Bullshit!....
My husband says if he was in a battle, he would want God on his side. How could that be if he is opposed to the troops? Please, vote No to Homosexuals openly serving. (How we wish that was on the ballot.)
I found in Viet Nam that they bleed red when shot just like me.
I conclude that homophobia is directly proportionate the the degree of which your life is in danger. If the Chicoms just launched a shoot and forget supersonic missile at my aircraft carrier and the best person at intercepting that missile based on the their demonstrated skills just happens to prefer sex with the same gender, gimme the homo every time!
So, in other words, we shouldn’t expect to see more than a 50% reduction in our military personnel?
You want the homo?
How about we turn down perfectly good men just to inflate the number of queers in the ranks?
You still want the homo?
Next we lose even better men (and women) as they elect to stay the hell away from the fags that have overtaken the Armed Forces.
And you still want the homo?
You are a Flaming Liberal.
