Deportations of illegal immigrants climb to new record
Washington Post ^ | October 6, 2010 | Shankar Vedantam

The Obama administration announced Wednesday that in the past year it deported more than 392,000 unauthorized immigrants - a record.

Officials at the federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency said that 195,000 of these removals, during the fiscal year that ended Sept. 30, were convicted criminals. They included more than 1,000 murderers, nearly 6,000 sex-offenders, 45,000 drug-offenders and 28,000 drunk drivers.

The percentage of deported unauthorized immigrants who are criminals has soared in recent years, in keeping with a new emphasis at the Department of Homeland Security to use immigration enforcement as a crime-fighting tool.

"We've made a decision to go after criminal aliens and prioritize them for removal," said Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano. She added, "It has been another record-breaking year at ICE - one that has seen ICE enforce the law at record levels, and in sensible, firm and thoughtful ways."

Stop moving your lips, and show us the documented proof of this, Obama.

Although the Administration is quick to claim credit for this, many of these guys had probably been in the system for a couple of years already and had run out of appeals.

Part of the key to this is that nearly half of the deportations involved convicted criminals. Most of the murderers and sex offenders would have served time and thus were already in the ICE pipeline. Cooperation by local authorities likely contributed to this effect as well.

FREEPERS  --- don't be fooled. Few of these are deportations from the interior....say from New Jersey or Utah. There are few raids and roundups at workplaces

392,000 unauthorized immigrants deported means 95% of these are simply Mexicans who are caught near the border and sent back on a bus to try again later.

This 392,000 number also includes visa overstayers who got a letter of deportation and left under their own steam. Paid their own ticket

ICE currentsly has a catch and release program . They fine the employers , but do not detain the illegals. How do you have a increase in deportation if you don’t actually detain the illegals?

I heard a ridiculous tease on WMAL radio tonight “Over 50% of illegal aliens deported are criminals”...who writes the copy over there Obama’s teleprompter? How about 100% of are of illegal aliens are CRIMINALS...they are here ILLEGALLY and thus are breaking our LAWS therefore making them criminals. Lets change their designation to alien criminals!

I sure have’nt seen the decrease in illegals in Connecticut. It looks like their numbers are increasing.

Hmmmmm, does the article say where they deported these illegal invaders TO? (Sorry, I won't give the COMpost a hit.)

Perhaps they are shipping the west coast criminals to the east coast and vice versa.

And of this small fraction of those who should be deported, how many were back in the US within a week?

The article is pretty accurate. The ramp up of deportation cases has been going on for about five years.....really no change between the Bush and Obama administrations. Its a big money business now with lots of new detention facilities run by Corrections Corporation of America. And its not just criminal aliens.....people pulled over for going 45 in a 35, etc.

The way I interpret this is that more illegal aliens were prosecuted for crimes previously (when the tidal wave was at its highest) 2-5 years ago. Have served their time and are now being deported (released). It also stands to reason that state budgets have plummeted and as a cost saving measure are being released to the feds.

It in no way appears that enforcement for those here and only guilty of being here illegally is up or even matching previous years.

I think that's a smart interpretation of what's (allegedly) going on here.

Personally, I'm not convinced that deportations are up. This mis-administration is doing everything in their usurped power to protect illegal aliens and keep our border wide open.

It’s called blowing blowing smoke out of your butt to try and cover your tracks. They may have deported 392,000, but there are 3 or 4 million yet that need to go also.

With a porous border, what good does that do? They’ll all be back in a few weeks.

392,000? That’s a lot of Canadiens coming over for treatment before ObamaCare kicks in...

The problem is that, by bragging about the number of illegal aliens being deported who have been convicted of committing very serious crimes, the Obama administration seeks to take the focus off enforcing immigration laws against everyone else who is here illegally. DHS has already stated that it will ignore deportation orders that have already been issued against most illegal aliens.

The Obama administration announced Wednesday that in the past year it deported more than 392,000 unauthorized immigrants - a record.

Remember how the Obama administration claimed huge numbers of jobs created or saved by the "stimulus" program, yet when those claims were examined closely, they were found to be completely bogus?

Why would anybody with even half a brain accept any numbers released by this administration as true or accurate?

That is, why would anybody other than a credulous Washington Post reporter accept such numbers...

Deportations of illegal immigrants climb to new record

Probably accurate given that there are a record number of illegal immigrants freely crossing the border.
