How Do We Improve the Public Schools??
rantrave.com ^ | Oct. 5, 2010 | Bruce Deitrick Price

Here's my sin: I'm trying to find some grounds for optimism. Achilles2000 (and others) say, forget it:

"The only thing in the middle of the road is road kill ;-)

For those who care about America and liberty, there is exactly one right answer - education by government must end."

I don't say this is wrong, just that I don't think anything so drastic will actually happen. Conservatives might take over Congress. This is no time to assume the worst.

Meanwhile, the main thing I'm struck by as I read comments on many sites is that the average American doesn't know anything about the idiotic ideas loose in the public schools. We are up against a brilliant PR machinery. If people understood what scam artists the Education Establishment is, there would be wholesale revulsion.

Anyway, for anyone still interested in this debate, here's a piece that tries to sketch the big picture quickly. Full title: "Public Schools Are Worse Than Most People Believe. And Have Been For Far Longer Than Most People Realize."

This is my attempt at counter-PR.

This is fairly easy to consider:

No more big Campii for elementary schools- small neighborhood schools only. Re-institute technical and vocational schools. ALL control returned to the parents, first, and the teachers. Cut the administrative staffs and “guidance counselors, in every district, by half. Push out the academics and no more undergrad or post grad “studies” in “education”. All teachers to be educated in their discipline, only.

Push out the unions.

Shut down Carter’s department of “education”.

Here are the things necessary to save US Public Schools:

There is no saving public schools. Single payer has never worked in the past, it doesn't work now and will never work. It's just basic economics based in human nature. There are two necessary elements to successful education of children.

1. Fathers must raise their children.

2. Parents must pay for their children's education.

Our government schools have been nationalized and put into the hands of a socialist labor union with ties to world workers commie labor movement.....

So, of course there’s a counter-movement to “privatize”.

Most important things are to decentralize and de-unionize to minimize damage......

But what is the purpose of education????

the constructivist NCTM standard and science by “inquiry methods” which were first championed by John Dewey. These are the current fads and the basis for most state standards for these subjects. Both are horrible - how a kid ever learns anything being taught like that, I don’t know.

Here's a clue. John Dewey and company were never educators in the sense you're thinking of. They were indoctrinators (Marxist, of course) of the first stripe. The kids don't learn anything, and you cannot think of how they can, when the real trick is; they were never supposed to in the first place.

They only thing that mattered was getting them concentrated, in one place, to spew the propaganda, disguised as education. Real facts, real history, real skills, were all deemed less essential than the propaganda, or even totally non-essential. Some, like critical thinking skills, were deemed "counterproductive, and were not only ignored, but even totally discouraged by the "educators" in the "educatees"...

Abolish tenure AND mandatory attendance.

I served 12 years in the US Public Re-Education Camp System and hated every minute of it.

I had to deal with many extreme left-wing teachers and that is what got me hating liberals.

Yep - you nailed it. I’ve been filling in the blank spots and countering programming for my kids for years.

Get rid of tenure.
Require regular testing that verify teachers can read, speak and write the King's English along with having math skills.
Get the unions out of teaching.
Make the pay and benefits no more than slightly less than what is found in the real (private sector) world.

Make it the parent’s responsibility to have their children trained to sit, listen and participate in the class & homework.
Make the child and parent come to a training class with children for such training for as long as the children miss behave or don't get it.

Unions are the primary problem, and bad parents come in as a close second.

If the above doesn't work in three years, you give families the option of vouchers for 65% of the cost of the public education for private school and return the other 35% for national debt repayment.

Sealing the border would help, too. All those illegal children aren’t helping.

I agree with you, wintertime.

It’s gonna get destroyed. It has to. There is a time for everything, and right now many things are going to get destroyed, because they are too evil and bloated not to.

9. Concentrate on the basics: reading, writing and arithmetic

The problem is that they say that is what they are doing. But they use a system that is so convoluted and confusing that the children mostly are unable to learn.

How about write a book about how horrible the schools are with lots of personal stuff from various teachers and students to give it a real story feel? Make it simple for ordinary people who are not scholars to read?

Maybe Regnery or someone would pay for printing it.

In short, ‘public education’ is nothing more than ‘serf school’.

First, improve the attitudes and home environment of the students.

That's a classic 'teacher's union' excuse...

I love horror stories like this. Even at a Christian college. More scary than Steven King. People have no idea the nonsense that goes on.

If anybody wants to write up some stories, I’ll present them if anonymity is needed. Or I’ll email interview the most vocal person.
