Southern Shame, Southern Ghosts (CONFEDERATE FLAG BAN)
World Net Daily ^ | September 30, 2010 | Franklin Raff

Posted on 09/30/2010 3:55:02 AM PDT by golux

The University of Mississippi has terminated its mascot, "Colonel Reb." The mascot, an archetypal Southern gentleman with a hat, cane, and a little bow-tie, is of course racist.

Affable, bearded and jaunty, with a bright costume that cleverly foiled his dark history on the plantation, Col. Reb, when he was alive, looked rather like that other infamous slave-driver, Col. Sanders, whose inscrutable and permanent smile these days (in markets where he still shows his face) offers only a faint clue as to the fortunes he's made in his long, post-war masquerade as a peddler of fried chicken.

"We just want it to be over," said one Mississippi student on the subject of Col. Reb's execution.

Watch your back, Sanders.

There is of course nothing sacred about a football mascot or a corporate brand, and nothing particularly sad about the disappearance of either one, except for the fact that now there is nothing left of Southern symbolism to erase.

(SNIP)

And now we learn that what legions of Americans consider to be a transcendent symbol of extraordinary military leadership and valor, states' rights, indefatigable heroism, enduring pride and strength in the face of terrible odds and calamitous defeat – the Confederate battle flag – is now officially deemed a symbol of hate by the U.S. armed forces. Prospective members of all branches of the armed forces who happen to have a "Confederate flag" tattoo are automatically rejected.

(SNIP)

When they once again encounter their ancestors, which I believe they will, how will so many Americans account for their feeble treachery?

Maybe, like the Mississippi student, they will say: "We just wanted it to be over."

I wonder what some of those old heroes might say in reply....

Yes they did. Sherman wanted to absolutely decimate the south and he did on his march to the sea. He destroyed fields, livestock, burned homes, and burned whole cities. It was deliberate. And Lincoln was ok with it.

Don’t deny what you say on FR. It’s all in your past posts Caractacus.... or is it Bob? or Boudicca?

He didn’t come to FR because it was a conservative site, because he isn’t one. Never was, not since the day he joined. His past posts are there for all to see. He hates:
Palin
both Bush’s
Beck
Fox News
Cheney
Christine O’Donnell
Baptist
the Army
the South
Southerners
pro-life
anti-homo marriages
Was pissed at schools that wouldn’t who O propaganda speeches.... I could go one and on.
But he does love Jon Stewart and is especially fond Stewart making fun of Beck. Blank squirter, you fool no one. The only ones that you fool are ones just like you. You are a concern troll and I can assure it is noted by most.

Creepy? He lies about something he said, it’s on FR for all to see, well there it is. BAM! He said it. You’re the creepy one, with your nose stuck up his $$$ 24/7.
Go look at his past posts. He gives a new meaning to OCD! SEVEN years he’s been fighting the civil war again on FR.

Belittling the South and all Southerners. Day after day, week after week, month after month, year after year. Rudeness, belittling, name calling, insulting....When he stops bashing my heritage and ancestors. Anyone that has been consistently been called a troll, hundreds of times, since the time they joined FR, probably is. He’s called a troll on all threads, not just CW threads. He was labeled a troll by old timers here long before I even knew FR existed.

It’s rude and should not be tolerated on FR. It’s really easy to check my past posting history and see that I didn’t come to FR to fight the civil war. I rarely even post on these threads.

He says he only bashes “lost causers”. That is a LIE! He bashes the South and Southerners.

Here are some examples:

NON SEQUITUR BASHING SOUTHERNS

What NS said today:

“For example? Unless you’re counting any disagreement at all with the Southron side of the issue ‘antagonism’. Other than that you tell me just how my antagonism has manifested itself on anything but the topic of the Soutehrn rebellion?” Non-sequitur

Okey dokey, how about these?

The major difference between the South and yogurt is that yogurt has a living culture.

Southern inbred is more likely.

Spongebob: Hey Patrick, guess what I am!
Patrick: Um, stupid?
Spongebob: No, I’m Texas!
Patrick: What’s the difference?

If we kiss your ass, or kick it yet again, I’m afraid we’ll cause brain damage.

Obviously not a son of the South since my parents were married - to each other - and they weren’t first cousins.

There is a very old saying in the South about people who are as dumb as a fence post or a rock. It does as much good to argue with a post as it is does with some people. The results are the same.
And I imagine that the Southern population is equally divided between the two types. Non-sequitur

Mercy is not a Southron trait.

Southron stupidity. Gotta love it.

We can’t all be smart like Southerners and carry a spare in case our car breaks down.(Note*then he posts pic of some POS car, insinuating that all Southerners have trashy cars

Nor do I ever recall him claiming he was one. I believe he was from Tennessee, but I never held that against him.

Other poster: I guarantee this: YOU WOULD NEVER SEE A SOUTHERNER BOW TO A SAUDI.
Non-sequiterNah. Y’all are into holding hands.*Note then he posts pic of Bush with Saudi King

Many of the ills of this country can be laid at the feet of the three Texas presidents we’ve had. And you think that having trashed the country you can just walk out.

NS- Ah, the last gasp of the Sothron psychotic: it nothing else works accuse your opponent of being a liberal. Nice to see that you’re being true to form. No doubt the fact that you can connect a black man to your pejorative is only icing on the cake for you.

liquored up Southerner doing what comes natural to them - peeing outside.

“Class” and “Southerner” are a contradiction in terms.

NS being a "Online Obsessive-Compulsive Personality Disorder (a.k.a. The Grammar Nazi) These poor jackasses"

I once gave NS a grammar lesson after he razzed me about a short five or six word sentence that he claimed to not understand. I inserted a semicolon that separated the two short clauses to make the sentence grammatically correct.

An anal retentive comes mind....

The Role of Islam in African Slavery

Slavery has been rife throughout all of ancient history. Most, if not all, ancient civilizations practiced this institution and it is described (and defended) in early writings of the Sumerians, Babylonians, and Egyptians. It was also practiced by early societies in central America and Africa. (See Bernard Lewis’s work Race and Slavery in the Middle East1 for a detailed chapter of the origins and practices of slavery.)

The Qur’an prescribes a humanitarian approach to slavery — free men could not be enslaved, and those faithful to foreign religions could live as protected persons, dhimmis, under Muslim rule (as long as they maintained payment of taxes called Kharaj and Jizya). However, the spread of the Islamic Empire resulted in a much harsher interpretation of the law. For example, if a dhimmis was unable to pay the taxes they could be enslaved, and people from outside the borders of the Islamic Empire were considered an acceptable source of slaves.

Although the law required owners to treat slaves well and provide medical treatment, a slave had no right to be heard in court (testimony was forbidden by slaves), had no right to property, could marry only with permission of their owner, and was considered to be a chattel, that is the (moveable) property, of the slave owner. Conversion to Islam did not automatically give a slave freedom nor did it confer freedom to their children. Whilst highly educated slaves and those in the military did win their freedom, those used for basic duties rarely achieved freedom. In addition, the recorded mortality rate was high — this was still significant even as late as the nineteenth century and was remarked upon by western travelers in North Africa and Egypt.

Slaves were obtained through conquest, tribute from vassal states (in the first such treaty, Nubia was required to provide hundreds of male and female slaves), offspring (children of slaves were also slaves, but since many slaves were castrated this was not as common as it had been in the Roman empire), and purchase. The latter method provided the majority of slaves, and at the borders of the Islamic Empire vast number of new slaves were castrated ready for sale (Islamic law did not allow mutilation of slaves, so it was done before they crossed the border). The majority of these slaves came from Europe and Africa — there were always enterprising locals ready to kidnap or capture their fellow countrymen.

Black Africans were transported to the Islamic empire across the Sahara to Morocco and Tunisia from West Africa, from Chad to Libya, along the Nile from East Africa, and up the coast of East Africa to the Persian Gulf. This trade had been well entrenched for over 600 years before Europeans arrived, and had driven the rapid expansion of Islam across North Africa.

By the time of the Ottoman Empire, the majority of slaves were obtained by raiding in Africa. Russian expansion had put an end to the source of “exceptionally beautiful” female and “brave” male slaves from the Caucasians — the women were highly prised in the harem, the men in the military. The great trade networks across north Africa were as much to do with the safe transportation of slaves as other goods. An analysis of prices at various slave markets shows that eunuchs fetched higher prices than other males, encouraging the castration of slaves before export.

Documentation suggests that slaves throughout Islamic world were mainly used for menial domestic and commercial purposes. Eunuchs were especially prised for bodyguards and confidential servants; women as concubines and menials. A Muslim slave owner was entitled by law to use slaves for sexual pleasure.

As primary source material becomes available to Western scholars, the bias towards urban slaves is being questioned. Records also show that thousands of slaves were used in gangs for agriculture and mining. Large landowners and rulers used thousands of such slaves, usually in dire conditions: “of the Saharan salt mines it is said that no slave lived there for more than five years.1”

If you have the opportunity, they are holding the annual reenactment at Perryville this weekend.

The largest battle fought in Kentucky, Perryville was the final engagement of the Confederate Invasion of Kentucky in the fall of 1862. Confederate General Braxton Bragg's Army of Tennessee (22,000 men) engaged the 1st Corps (and elements of 3rd Corps) of Union General Don Carlos Buell's Army of the Ohio (about 16,000 men) and inflicted severe casualties before driving the Union forces from the field. Union losses were 4,400, or 27.5%, while the Confederate losses were 3,300, or 15%, making this one of the bloodiest battles of the war as far as percentage of casualties is concerned.

This battle was one of the few engagements where Bragg actually took the offensive, and at the end of the day he was king of the battlefield. Then he was informed that there were two other Union corps out there (for some unknown reason they sat out the fight, even though they could hear the cannonfire) and that each of these forces had more men than he had in this entire Army of Tennessee. Quickly gathering together his forces, he beat a hasty retreat to the southwest, abandoning Kentucky. While there were numerous cavalry raids and guerilla operations in Kentucky for the remainder of the war, this was the last time that a sizeable Confederate army invaded the Bluegrass State.

Perryville is located in Central Kentucky, about an hour southwest of Lexington. Parking at the battlefield will be $10. There is a moderate sized museum there on the battlefield, which charges a $5 admission fee.

I am on vacation starting in about 22 hours, so I plan on attending the reenactment on Saturday and then taking some of my friends down to Fort Donelson (located on the southern end of Land Between the Lakes) later on in the week.
