Southern Shame, Southern Ghosts (CONFEDERATE FLAG BAN)
World Net Daily ^ | September 30, 2010 | Franklin Raff

Posted on 09/30/2010 3:55:02 AM PDT by golux

The University of Mississippi has terminated its mascot, "Colonel Reb." The mascot, an archetypal Southern gentleman with a hat, cane, and a little bow-tie, is of course racist.

Affable, bearded and jaunty, with a bright costume that cleverly foiled his dark history on the plantation, Col. Reb, when he was alive, looked rather like that other infamous slave-driver, Col. Sanders, whose inscrutable and permanent smile these days (in markets where he still shows his face) offers only a faint clue as to the fortunes he's made in his long, post-war masquerade as a peddler of fried chicken.

"We just want it to be over," said one Mississippi student on the subject of Col. Reb's execution.

Watch your back, Sanders.

There is of course nothing sacred about a football mascot or a corporate brand, and nothing particularly sad about the disappearance of either one, except for the fact that now there is nothing left of Southern symbolism to erase.

(SNIP)

And now we learn that what legions of Americans consider to be a transcendent symbol of extraordinary military leadership and valor, states' rights, indefatigable heroism, enduring pride and strength in the face of terrible odds and calamitous defeat – the Confederate battle flag – is now officially deemed a symbol of hate by the U.S. armed forces. Prospective members of all branches of the armed forces who happen to have a "Confederate flag" tattoo are automatically rejected.

(SNIP)

When they once again encounter their ancestors, which I believe they will, how will so many Americans account for their feeble treachery?

Maybe, like the Mississippi student, they will say: "We just wanted it to be over."

I wonder what some of those old heroes might say in reply....

The south and Christopher Columbus are just the beginning in this war...brought to us from those who think America is just one big race crime.

What about the campaign to demonize Abraham Lincoln, the greatest friend the average Southerner ever had?

the America is a crime bunch or western civ is one big race crime are not my pals

but you are polite

hell i don’t hate any of you...not even non sensical...not even Lincoln though he did really push the Leviathan..in my opinion anyhow

being a many generations white guy all the way back to FFV and Pochahontas and Rolfe and whatnot I simply do not see race as the American crucible or prism of view

but many do...mostly non whites or whites in homogeneous areas where such indulgences come cheap

i will discuss candidly the state of white and black race and all in between with anyone if they care

i have lived it and know it all for what it is

it’s not encouraging nowadays

i also lived back when white racism was real, this bogeyman crap folks here pillow bite over like CSA flags and Colonel Reb is just something for angry black guys and soft whites to puff over and feel righteous...it ain’t white supremacy

I am on record here as ambivalent about Lincoln and praise his terms he offered to my kinfolks.....Sherman too though I am not crazy about Bill otherwise.

I think Boothe got what he had coming considering.

Lincoln had his pluses and minuses....and both were kingsize.

Southern re-revisionists are not the only ones on Abe’s legacy’s arse....libertarians and others as well.

I just can’t get all warm and fuzzy over him but I don’t hate him.

Now Thaddeus Stevens and Sumner...yes sir...I don’t see much redemption there.

Some Yankees are still just like that...unlikable.

Oh please...you admitted you joined FR because you were banned from other forums and JR let you rage on Southerners. Also, you just said that you were proud to be the most hated poster on FR. Now ONLY a demented attention whore with no real life outside the internet would say that.

See the d is under the r. It’s called a typo. Don’t tell me you’re now a grammar nazi. Grammar nazi’s are the lamest people on the internet............. hands down.

Being a Grammar Nazi on the Internet :

is like being a clown in a church.

you’re going to get laughed at
you’re not going to be taken seriously
and you just don’t belong.

Online Obsessive-Compulsive Personality Disorder (a.k.a. The Grammar Nazi) These poor jackasses have nothing else that validates their meaningless existences besides making arbitrary grammar speculations on other people on the internet.

Oh please...you're as full of crap as a Christmas turkey. Again.

Also, you just said that you were proud to be the most hated poster on FR.

No, I said I was the most reviled Yankee on FR. And considering the sub-moron level of the majority of the Lost Causers, yourself for example, I consider that label a badge of honor.

Now ONLY a demented attention whore with no real life outside the internet would say that.

Speaking of demented attention whores, how the hell are ya, Mo-joe?

“Lee’s warcrimes included murder of captured US soldiers, forcing captured US soldiers to prepare defenses, and torture of captured US soldiers.”

Prove it, Yankee!

Now Thaddeus Stevens and Sumner...yes sir...I don’t see much redemption there.

I used to not think highly of Stevens, but my opinion of him has gone way up over the years. I think if his all at once vision of Reconstruction had been carried out, we would avoided a lot of difficulties later. I admit that Sumner is harder to warm up to.

Sherman and his lieutenants saved my family's region from a lot of lawlessness and made the world a lot safer place for the ordinary citizen there both Union and reb, so I have some positive impressions of the man.

And I totally understand how you must think of the liberal world's widespread holier than thou attitude toward Mississippi. You don't have to be a fan of the Confederacy to see that the state has been the #1 source of cheap moral indignation over the years for many who are willing to cast the first stone though hardly without sin themselves.
