Rep. Alan Grayson's 'Taliban' ad backfires
Politico ^ | Updated: 9/28/10 10:19 AM EDT | ANDY BARR

Rep. Alan Grayson's attempt to equate his Republican challenger with the Taliban is having a big impact — just not the one Grayson may have hoped.

In an ad, Grayson's campaign calls Republican Daniel Webster a "religious fanatic" — a charge it supports with video in which Webster seems to encourage wives to "submit" to their husbands.

But FactCheck.org says the narrative crafted by the Florida Democrat's campaign distorts what Webster was actually saying.

"Grayson has lowered the bar even further. He's using edited video to make his rival appear to be saying the opposite of what he really said," the nonpartisan site, sponsored by the Annenberg Public Policy Center, wrote on its blog Monday.

"Grayson manipulates a video clip to make it appear Webster was commanding wives to submit to their husbands, quoting a passage in the Bible. Four times, the ad shows Webster saying wives should submit to their husbands," the site points out. "In fact, Webster was cautioning husbands to avoid taking that passage as their own. The unedited quote is: 'Don't pick the ones [Bible verses] that say, 'She should submit to me.'"

Grayson was also reprimanded by the Orlando Sentinel, which posted a story Monday headlined "Grayson's 'Taliban Dan' Ad Takes Webster's Words Out of Context, Twists Meaning."

"By twisting Webster's words, Grayson risks eroding some of the support he may have won from independent voters," the paper concluded.

“Bible verses must be taken in context, reading the passages before and after a verse is helpful.”

Ironically, that is the point Webster was trying to make in the clip Grayson used. The whole quote was “So, write a journal. Second, find a verse. I have verses for my wife. Don’t pick the ones that say, uh, “She should submit to me.” That’s in the Bible, but pick the ones that you’re supposed to do. So instead, “Love your wife even as Christ loved the church,” and so on, instead of “Wives, submit yourselves to your own husbands.” She can pray that if she wants to, but don’t you pray it.”

Grayson’s people to the phrase “She should submit to me.” out of that statement and kept repeating it.

The term “Crazy” gets thrown around quite a bit but this character really seems like he has some serious mental problem.

He’ll justify it by saying the other guy does it without providing proof.

The local news radio station (WDBO, AM 580) is reporting that Webster's contributions have increased by 300% since this ad came out.

I just sent him $100, and I'm currently unemployed. I urge anyone who can possibly make a contribution to do so!

I was visiting with friends the other night and they turned on Blockhead's (Bill O'Reilly) show. One segment on the show revolved around the whackjob Imadeadinnerjacket and Blockhead was repeatedly asking if he was crazy. I remarked that I didn't think so. Evil maybe, but not insane.

Asked for examples of who I might think of as truly insane I replied that I though Moammar Qaddafi qualifies, as does Alan Greyson. About that time an image of Nancy Piglosi came on the screen. We turned to each other and all started laughing...;-)

He should be censured.
I don't care if they censure him, as long as he loses!

Have there been any polls released from this race?

Just an "internal Grayson poll" which showed a 13-point lead (for Grayson, of course) and also an absurd 40%-8% lead "among Independents". Time for Raz to get in there for a REAL poll.

Do you know anything about Daniel Webster? He was a brilliant conservative leader in the Florida state Senate. He led the conservative revolution that has guided the state through recovery from years of democratic machine politics.

Whom are you talking about? You LIKE Grayson? His “rival” is Webster. Read the full quote from Webster. Don’t accept the selectively edited snips that Grayson used in this idiotic advert. Grayson is clearly a psychotic.

There is no such thing as a “factoid” . “-oid” means like, so it would be “like a fact”, and therefore NOT a fact. A humanoid is not quite human. Originally “factoid” was an ironic term indicating that the “fact” being offered was not actually factual. However, CNN and other stupid ass sources have taken to treating the “-oid” as if it were a mere diminutive, and using the term to mean “trivial but true fact.” So this invented word means a questionable or spurious—unverified, incorrect, or fabricated—statement presented as a fact, but with no veracity.

So, when YOU say “Islam means submit” is a factoid, you are either trying to be clever with an agenda, or completely wrong.
It is the latter- Islam translates from arabic to english as meaning “submission”.
Do I have your motivation or meaning in posting this wrong?

I don’t normally make negative comments about a person’s appearance but, I swear, Alan Grayson looks like a maniacal serial rapist. He looks as creepy as his radical left-wing extremist views would dictate.

I’m in Webster’s district; I just sent him $200.

He needs a campaign manager that fights.
