University of Texas at Austin just issued an alert of an armed suspect at the Perry-Casteneda Library. Alert went out to students' cell phones. KXAN reporter told me that no shots have been fired but Austin PD is setting up a command post and UT police are hunting for suspect. Also said students are being told to go back to their dorms. IMO, it's more dangerous to have students out walking to their dorms instead of staying inside buildings but whatever...
Not a lot. He and some others have locked themselves in a room. Says SWAT is all over the bldg.
No one allowed to go anywhere.............
Apparently the computer sciences guys over there are a little more jumpy than us engineers, a bunch of them had locked themselves into their offices.
This crappy reporting better not preempt Rush on 590 am. I am worried it will.
Austin Chief of Police confirmed that the recovered weapon is an AK-47. Although I’m sure it’s really a semi-auto version. And probably made from parts that were originally something other than AK-47, but rather former Soviet block country clone or near clone of the AK.
But it’s at least a “generic” AK of some sort.
Just got a call that Oklahoma Christian University students in chappel and praying for UT students. Told them it looks like everything ok now.
She posted on her Facebook page that she is home grading papers. The bane of grad assistant's life.
But one associate posted that he was supposed to be at a meeting in the library, but overslept, but that the people he was to meet with were moved out of the library building.
Apparently the "action" was on the other side, 21st street side, of the library from where my daughter's office building is.
I guess we are just lucky. I work on Ft. Hood, but was off post having lunch when "Major" Hassan shot and killed 14 people not more than two miles from my house, which is actually closer to the site than my office is. However we've moved around a bit since then, and my two co-workers are now less than a mile from the shooting site. I went back on post (parts were not yet locked down at that time) and then ended up locked down until around 8 PM.
No, those are pit bulls!
PD are searching and clearing buildings. Students are coming out slowly and with their hands up as they pass outside PD. It will take quite some time before campus it open.

Dorms are open and are serving lunch!
It may take 3 more hours to clear all buildings.
APD is checking cars and are fingerprinting at a particular outside seating area by a food trailer.
Fingerprinting who??
UT speaker system just gave the “All Clear” announcement. Lockdown over.
Director of Communitcations says the “All Clear” doesn’t mean everything is ok but that APD has narrowed down area and that some areas of campus are open and shuttle buses will be available for evacuation to get students and faculty away from the library area (so if it’s not all clear, then don’t say it is!!!). Many buildings have not yet been searched so many students have still not been let out.
Checking prints at picnic tables around the food trailer.
Still searching for 2nd suspect. If there ever was a 2nd person, he’s probably long gone by now.
Ok - thanks. You seem to be closer to the action than I am.
It’s just crazy officials would say it’s “all clear” and then say that doesn’t mean “all clear” - just stupid crazy, grrr.
The bizarre shape of the Perry-Castaneda Library (PCL) is some architect’s design of what the outline of the state of Texas would look like in the form of a building.
It was NOT named after Texas governor Rick Perry (a well-known Aggie). The commielibs back in the 1970s had a sparring session whether to name the library after a token black or a token Hispanic so they split the difference and named it after one of each.
It sure sounds to me like the shooter wanted a suicide-by-cop but decided to just finish himself off once he was cornered in the PCL. I don’t think there was ever a second gunmen. Just echoes from all the buildings around campus and people not observant enough to spot the real gunman.
Have you been released from your building?
State government buildings around UT were also in lockdown. I never heard if the Capitol building was or not. For those who don’t know the location, the Texas Capitol building is like 3-4 blocks south of the library.
Uh? Doesn't look anything close to the shape of Texas. The architect must have been smoking something.
