Decapitated body found near Evanston school

Evanston police were called out to a field near a middle school after a man walking his dog this morning discovered a decapitated body there.

Police have pushed the media back from the area after discovering what appears to be an explosive device near the body, WGN-Ch. 9 reported about 8:40 a.m. Some residents were being evacuated from their homes. The Cook County sheriff's bomb squad was on the scene.

So, that leads me to believe it’s really NOT terrorism, so, they want our imaginations to run wild! ;)

An explosive collar makes more sense than a suicide vest in such a circumstance. But the pizza guy’s device was pretty obvious to all who could see him. Such a collar could not be concealed like a vest under a jacket.

I think the pizza guy was in upstate New York.

Posters coming and going is part of the inevitable friction. This site has seen times that provided a few "opus" posts each week.

The mass separation that I had in mind involved the formation of a website, "WideAwakes." IIRC, the friction point was Rudy Giuliani.

Happy to read your report that PhiKapMom is still posting here. And, FWIW, from what I read into her personality from her posting style, I would not expect any sort of "snit" departure from her.

I heard about this on the radio on the way in to work. Radio reported residents in the area being awaken by a 4am explosion. Then at 5am, the headless body is found by a man walking his dog. Curious, to say the least.

Yes, I recall some Freepmail conversations with her and she seemed normal. ;) But I know sometimes I get a little ruffled by things people post to me and I take a few days off. I don’t generally announce it tho. I just let the dust settle. Mostly so I don’t go post something I’ll later regret that makes me look like a total idiot. I’d rather let the other person look like one. :)

The additional info from the radio was that there was a second “controlled explosion” of an item near the headless body. Also reported that body was a male and likely older than 30 years old.

Another aspect of this incident that is eerily reminiscent of the OU Bombing 5 years ago...

I remember reading upthread that there was supposed to be a press conference about this earlier this morning - and not a peep about it, since...

Sorry - the ‘suicide by bomb’ theory just ain’t doing anything for me....

There are way too many “Dogs That Didn’t Bark” in this story for comfort.. Where’s the BATFE (which magically appaears whenever an ‘explosive device’ goes off); where’s the FBI (with their patented ‘Terrorism Not Suspected’ assertions); where’s the Department of Homeland Security (basically useless, but always eager to get ‘camera time’)???

Speaking of ‘camera time’, where are the cameras, talking-heads, ‘experts’, and all the other panoply of ‘usual suspects’ that should be infesting the airwaves in a story like this???

I’m not buying suicide. Why would he have 2 pipe bombs? The second device was found intact.

I live over a half mile from the scene and was woken by the explosion, so am perplexed that any part of his body remains. Also, I ran across a bomb-squad detective dusting for prints on the door of a frozen yogurt shop then entering near Davis St Metra station on Church St in Evanston at 8:30am this morning, assume some relationship exists.

I find it hard to accept the suicide theory, also. I know there's exceptions to every rule, but suicide bombers usually want to take something or someone with them. They go to all that trouble to make some kind of statement.

Plus, if the few details we've got are true, and it was a premature or premeditated explosion, how does one explain the unexploded bomb found nearby?

BTW, there is a middle school nearby where the Decap's body was found. The school has been shut down for the day.
