Rahm Emanuel 'surprised' Chicago mayor won't seek reelection
But the White House chief of staff isn't saying -- yet -- whether he would like to succeed Richard Daley.

Reporting from Washington White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel said Tuesday he was "surprised" by Chicago Mayor Richard Daley's decision not to seek reelection but offered no hint as to whether he might be a candidate to succeed him.
"While Mayor Daley surprised me today with his decision to not run for reelection, I have never been surprised by his leadership, dedication and tireless work on behalf of the city and the people of Chicago," Emanuel said in an e-mailed statement Tuesday afternoon.
Daley's announcement in Chicago immediately triggered speculation in Washington about Emanuel's future. The former Chicago congressman had once set his sights on being speaker of the House, but being coaxed into joining the Obama administration scuttled those plans.
Since then, however, he's made no secret of his interest in running for office again, with the mayor's job at the top of his list.
"I hope Mayor Daley seeks reelection. I will work and support him if he seeks reelection. But if Mayor Daley doesn't, one day I would like to run for mayor of the city of Chicago," Emanuel told Charlie Rose in an April interview. "That's always been an aspiration of mine even when I was in the House of Representatives."

Daley never mailed anybody a dead fish to the best of my knowledge, so things could get interesting.
Obomba probably has a spot for Daley in the White House.....maybe he’s going to take Romer’s place???
Isn’t Mrs. Daley very ill?
That’s what I thought as well. I remember reading (can’t remember where) that her cancer had come back and was now in the bones.
Maybe Daley is looking a little farther into the future, and is planning to retire to a country that has no extradition treaty with the US.
In the Military, they make contingency plans all the time. Some just general outlines, some very detailed. I wonder just what the heck the people in the hussein obama administration are doing during the day when they are supposed to be working.
As the saying goes, "stuff" happens - they should be prepared, at least in a general way, to deal with it. The fact that they so obviously aren't just reinforces my belief that all these people are in over their heads, ill equipped, ill-prepared, and inexperienced at real leadership. It's all been fun and games, spouting Marxist theories and discussing the "obvious" advantages of socialism. But now that they actually have some power, they're finding out a lot of accountability and responsibility goes along with it, and there are very real consequences (good and bad, but mostly bad) to their actions. Oh the horror for the little liberals who were raised believing they should get credit for "doing their best" even when they fail. Now they're finding out the real world expects real results. Watching the obama administration flail around ineffectually while their MSM cheerleaders try to give them credit for trying reminds me of the exchange between Goodspeed and Mason in "The Rock":
Stanley Goodspeed: I'll do my best.
John Mason: Your "best"! Losers always whine about their best. Winners go home and .... the prom queen.
The obama administration is filled with people who are definitely not winners.
I really don’t think this took Rahm by surprise.
Phffffttt! These bastard children are just to calculating.
Good Point. November is not going to go well for Hussein IMHO.
Perfect cover-up planning..Dead Fish needs to vacate the White House - so now the story is being floated that Dead Fish always wanted to be da mayor of Chicago...so Daly has been given his walkin’ papers to make room for Dead Fish.
Here is probably the real answer.. Its hard to steal and skim when everyone is broke, also the years ahead are going to involve REAL WORK, besides parties on the taxpayers dime...
“so Daly has been given his walkin papers”
I am not a Daly fan but I am sure he isn’t afraid of Rahm or Obama. I would think it the other way around. He’s leaving because he’s ready.
Did you see the picture at the top of the LA Times article? It sure looks like they’re eloping. Daly must be the “odd man out”.
A Daley not running for re-election in Chicago? Is he planning to die of cancer very soon?
>>Obomba probably has a spot for Daley in the White House.....maybe hes going to take Romers place???<<
Time for RATs to pull a Lautenberg? Consider that Alex G. may be indicted before the election and Emmanuel wants the mayor’s job, and you have the scenario for a Lautenberg.
Daley can see that the good times for the machine are long over... now it becomes a matter of who goes to jail. So leaving now improves his odds of avoiding that inconvenience.
I was surprised too. His poll numbers are crap but I didn’t think he would lose because no one would run against.
If we had got the Olympics he’d be staying I wager.
Boy is it ever on. Last open seat for the Mayoralty, 1947. Ed Kelly was the last Mayor to voluntarily step down. (doesn’t sound like he wanted to though) I realize I know nothing at all about the mayors between Anton Cermak and Daley Sr.
No Republican has run since 1995, the last election that was officially partisan.
Rahm? JJJr? Luis G? Out of those 3 I’d actually have to prefer JJJr. Barf.
Two years. That is all it will take for ramh to turn Chicago into Detroit. It will be a wonderful way to finally directly connect at least one of these scumbags to the damage he has done.
