Fire officials launched a spotter plane in the skies over the 3,500-acre wildfire west of Boulder this morning, as more than 3,000 evacuees waited to learn whether their homes survived overnight.
At a morning briefing, Boulder Sheriff's spokesman Rick Brough said 3,500 people had been evacuated from the area of the fire. After it whipped out of control in 45 mph winds Monday, winds today were forecast to range in the 3 to 6 mph range, giving firefighters a chance to contain the blaze.
The goal for today was to focus on protecting structures, and pinning the fire in an area south of Left Hand Canyon Drive, north of Boulder Canyon Drive, west of Poorman Hill and east of Mt. Alto, Brough said. Once the spotter plane has

Good luck. Lots of people have worried for years a bad one could break out in a populated foothills area. This one looks bad.

The wind was very strong Monday morning. Barely any wind right now. I heard on the radio that the fire is not contained at all.
Good luck to you. I work in Boulder and the smoke was terrible this morning. Seems to have lifted a bit.
I can see that the smoke is blowing to the NE. Conditions are very dry which does not help. I am to the south of the fire at 8,500 ft elevation so I can see it clearly.
Yesterday was cool, but those winds created perfect conditions for that fire to take hold and spread like crazy.
My daughter goes to college there. The campus all OK?
Lots of people have worried for years
But they continue to build their houses on the side of a wooded hill. DUH!
Other than smoke and increased traffic, campus is good.
The smoke in Longmont was worse than in Boulder, this morning. It is very hard to breathe. Not sure how much longer I can stand being at work.
Smoke from the fire yesterday afternoon, kept creeping north to Firestone all day. Today, seems to be hugging the Front Range, mountains are not visible at all. Nice and cool here though, 65DegF.
I will have to post some pics I took at 11:30 am or so yesterday morning. Just after the fire started. Was breath taking then.
Just now, news update, tankers have not been able to get up because of the air inversion, too much smoke close to the ground. Hopefully within the hour.
Smoke visible south of the neighborhood:
These were taken about 1-1.5 hours after they said the fire started.
Also a thread here ( different news source so not a duplicate) discussing the fire: http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/2584150/posts
I’m in Superior just northwest of Rocky Mt Regional. The tankers having already been making runs this morning. I really hope they can get this under control today.
I know they said the tankers haven’t been up this morning, but one took off ( scouting/test run?) this morning around 8 ish. There have been at least 3 flyover in the past hour.
Yeap. News now reporting they are in the air, smoke is clearing. Possible high winds on the way this afternoon. Not good.
The tankers couldn't fly yesterday because of high winds and couldn't fly this morning because without the winds an inversion had formed holding the smoke in. Sheesh, we can't win. Sounds like they're flying this afternoon, though.
According to 9 News with the lower winds it's not spreading much today. Hope that's true.
Lots of smokein Boulder, but the fire is still far away from CU. Estimates now that 7,000 acres burned so far.
