Sowell sees the national equivalent of a "perfect storm," a gathering of "dangerous forces (that) have been building .. . for at least a half-century."
Yes, he says, our great nation has weathered many storms. But, he quickly notes, so did the Roman Empire before it collapsed. "Is that where America is headed?" Sowell asks upfront. "I believe it is. Our only saving grace is that we are not there yet - and that nothing is inevitable until it happens."......
The Obama administration "is not the root cause of the ominous dangers that face this country at home and aboard," Sowell says. But "it is the embodiment, the personification and the culmination of dangerous trends that began decades ago. Moreover, it has escalated those dangers to what may be a point of no return."
"The ruthless and corrupt way this bill was forced through Congress on a party-line vote, and in defiance of public opinion, provides a roadmap for how other "historic" changes can be imposed by Obama, Pelosi, and Reid. What will it matter if Obama's current approval rating is below 50 percent among the current voting public, if he can ram through new legislation to create millions of new voters by granting citizenship to illegal immigrants? That could be enough to make him a two-term president, in which case he could appoint enough Supreme Court justices to rubber-stamp further extensions of his power."
"Just one year ago, would you have believed that an unelected government official, not even a cabinet member confirmed by the Senate but simply one of the many "czars" appointed by the president, could arbitrarily cut the pay of executives in private businesses by 50 percent or 90 percent?
Did you think that another "czar" would be talking about restricting talk radio? That there would be plans afloat to subsidize newspapers - that is, to create a situation where some newspapers' survival would depend on the government's liking what they publish?
Did you imagine that anyone would even be talking about having a panel of so-called "experts" deciding who could and could not get life-saving medical treatments? ... ...Does any of this sound like America?"
"People ask me all the time, "Rush, you'll tell us when it's time to panic, right?" I say, "Yeah, and it's not time to panic." But I have just finished a column by Thomas Sowell that strikes me as somewhat remarkable. There should not be any doubt with Americans interested in the truth about who Barack Obama is and what he represents, it's become clear, surreal clear. Dr. Thomas Sowell, a brilliant, accomplished man, a distinguished gentleman. When distinguished gentlemen, distinguished Americans such as Thomas Sowell think and write as he has in his latest column, it's time to stop gathering evidence about Obama's character and do anything within the boundaries of the law to stop his agenda." [2]After the midterm elections, it will be absolutely crucial that the projected conservative majority in the House (and possibly the Senate) act on Rush's words and truly "do anything within the boundaries of the law to stop his [Obama's] agenda"; so that our country does not slip past the "point of no return."
Good post!
This illegal alien thing is going to be huge and nettlesome at the same time. If we don’t beat this horse to death before it gets up, the Republic is doomed.
The danger to America is not Barack Obama but a citizenry capable of entrusting a man like him with the Presidency. It will be far easier to limit and undo the follies of an Obama presidency than to restore the necessary common sense and good judgment to a depraved electorate willing to have such a man for their president.
"The problem is much deeper and far more serious than Mr. Obama, who is a mere symptom of what ails America . Blaming the prince of the fools should not blind anyone to the vast confederacy of fools that made him their prince.
"The Republic can survive a Barack Obama, who is, after all, merely a fool. It is less likely to survive a multitude of fools such as those who made him their president
Thomas Sowell is a man whom I greatly respect. His warning here should be deeply heeded. Although I will note, that Sowell reflects what many of us here have been saying for a long time, that the mere fact that an inexperienced and radical such as Obama could have been elected in the first place speaks volumes as to the current status of our country.
Taking back the congress will only be the first step in stopping the dismantling of America.
Without the resolve to bring these socialists to justice,
taking back the congress won’t mean a thing.
It’s past time some of these politicians were put under
oath.
Even many people in our movement, don't understand the danger we're in.
Some of us have been watching and preparing ourselves for this moment, since we were children.
“After the midterm elections, it will be absolutely crucial that the projected conservative majority in the House (and possibly the Senate) act on Rush’s words and truly “do anything within the boundaries of the law to stop his [Obama’s] agenda”; so that our country does not slip past the “point of no return.”
Simple and it would make Socialism impossible in America. Pass a law that any regulation the administration passes must be approved by congress.
Democrats will be against it as Socialism requires that the government constantly tinkers as unintended consequences pop up.
Republicans will be against it because irresponsible politicians want to pass laws to address the last set of problems but not be responsible for the consequences.
Our founders would have been for this law because it was their intention that the president would be merely an administrator domestically. The Modern American Presidency, where a single person is able to have the power to (effectively) pass new laws (through regulation) without popular consent, was one of their primary fears in defining the scope of the Presidency.
I’m pessimistic too. Government schools and universites will continue to churn out young communists.
So what do we do? Was caught off guard by this stuff when it started in 2007. There wasn’t enough time to “catch up.”
Maybe we should sell everything and buy a nice mobile home.
“The danger to America is not Barack Obama but a citizenry capable of entrusting a man like him with the Presidency.”
I disagree. The problem is not Barack Obama. He simply makes the problem clear. The problem is that we’ve empowered a single person to pass new laws through regulation without popular consent.
Dr. Sowell is truly a visionary. He’s kept his eye on the ball for the past 50 years, and, no doubt, he has encountered more rolled eyes than I have!
Although I'm encouraged by the polls showing a massive victory for Republicans in the upcoming November election, I simply don't trust most politicians, even those now claiming to be conservative, to do what needs to be done to even begin to repair the huge damage that has been done, recently by the Obama administration and in the past by our long, slow slide into mediocrity in so many aspects of our political and social life. Dr. Sowell makes the point better than I can but simply looking back a few decades and seeing how far we've sunk into 'creeping' socialism and a corrupt, coarse culture is enlightening - and depressing. I'm frankly skeptical that a bunch of newly-elected Republican congressmen and senators can turn this around - or that they'll even try very hard, once ensconced in the Washington political cocoon that is dominated by liberal Democrats. Then what?
This isn't simple, easily dismissed nostalgia for 'the good old days' but a bracing realization that our government has gotten totally out of control, is well on the way to bankrupting the country and reducing our vaunted standard of living and our influence for good in the world. Our 'entertainment' is riddled with filth posing as 'art' and our schools turn out barely literate young men and women that are steeped in liberal ideology and a popular culture that too often celebrates thugs and sluts, again, posing as 'artists'. As Dr. Sowell stated, the very fact that Barack Obama was taken seriously and then elected President of the United States by the American electorate is almost absurd, but here we are. I pray for my country.
You said “I disagree. The problem is not Barack Obama. He simply makes the problem clear. The problem is that weve empowered a single person to pass new laws through regulation without popular consent.”
No, BO could not have done what he has done without that crucial 2007 election which gave him both the house and the senate. I was just heartsick that day in November and more so in Nov. 2008.
We’ve empowered (not me anyhow) all of Washington to ram through anything that darn well takes their fancy.
Oh, but Khrushchev said that the Communists would defeat us from within, and from that day forward a sharp decline in morality and education began, to the point that such a mouthpiece for the Globalist shadow government could actually be elected.
The government has gotten totally out of control because congress has delegated making laws to the President, through the regulatory process.
Congress can claim responsibility for the next solution without having to take responsibility for the last problem.
He must be a racist!
Sorry to say this, but (at least) 40% of the people in this country are quite content let this continue full throttle.
And probably 25-30% (or more) are still in complete agreement with this fascism. There is no good reason to expect that will change. If they aren’t convinced this is bad by now, they can’t be convinced.
I am afraid that, like other liberal Jews, my BIL’s wife will still be defending Obama as the Brownshirts drag her out the door.
You, me and everyone else here on FreeRepublic is responsible for the problem. We did not stand up and, think and get involved effectively enough. Our sin is one of inaction rather than action.
Blaming BO is too easy and superficial.
By taking responsibility, I am empowering myself. This presidency didn’t just happen to me. I myself was not paying attention and expected Republicans to do things that were in my interest. Instead I’ve let them off the hook as they feel free to blame BO.
