Do you think the Shell/BP/ExxonMobil design and operation standards are significantly different on platforms in the North Sea, Australia and other locations?

Those companies and others are my clients and I've designed and constructed facilities around the world. They understand that sparks fly and gas burns regardless of the longitude and latitude.

Enjoy your conspiracy theory. I'll continue with my career in the oil/gas industry.

That list was a select list of major damages. It did not include all fires/explosions.

BOEMRE = Bureau of Ocean Energy Management, Regulation and Enforcement (Government). Out of curiosity, did they happen to have stats older than 2009?

BOEMRE is formerly known as The Mineral Management Service, the agency in charge of overseeing offshore oil exploration.

Obama appointed Michael Bromwich, a liberal lawyer, known for going after private businesses, to head up this agency in June of 2010.

This is the same agency to whom BP submitted its drilling plan March 10, 2009. Rather than subject the plan to a detailed environmental review before approving it as required by the National Environmental Policy Act, the agency declared the plan to be “categorically excluded” from environmental analysis because it posed virtually no chance of harming the environment.

Also, these stats look a lot like the Dept of Energy stats and the Steelworker Union stats (big dem supporters) and as I recall many of them were as minor as wastebasket fires.

I said this before - I do not trust anyone in this administration. I would want to see collaboration of any stats with unbiased outside sources before writing this off as “typical”.

What outside source do you think is going to collect statistics on the thousand fires that happened in the last ten years of Gulf of Mexico platforms & rigs?

Oil companies are not required to report them to anyone else.

Exactly, which is why I say that it is the major ones that get on the public radar. If you compare THOSE stats, it is crazy how many we have had this year.

Yes, they do. I have posted stats from 1996 on up.

There have been several energy related incidents this year (several oil, mine, energy/coal plant). I never remember hearing about so many major accidents nationwide in such a short period of time.

Plus it bothers me, just as the Deepwater explosion did, that there were airline scares and the car bomb the same week. I wonder if attacks come in bunches, and we know Al-q planned to target our energy sources.

So heck yeah, I think it could be terrorism. And people who come here with Obama’s oil disaster statistics from 2009 don’t impress me because we all know the dems have an anti-oil policy.

Anyway, that’s my .02 and I’m not going to keep arguing about it.

If you want stats from pre-2009, they’re available online. I don’t have access to special private info. Google will aid you, as will knowing that the agency in charge is BOEMRE.

As I said above, since 1996 the Gulf has averaged 72 fires and/or explosions a year. You haven’t heard about them any more than you’ve heard about every car crash in your town, and for the same reason.

If it happens every five days, it’s not really news.

My guess is environmental terrorism.

Another oil platform explosion (on a non-production rig no less) the day after eco-terrorist attacks Discovery Channel offices in DC.

Where was Al Gore? And what does he know? (half sarc/)

Hussein lost in court to stop drilling this week, and lo and behold, another explosion. Hmm.

You’d be well served by reading the entire thread before donning the foil beanie. Several of us who work in the industry have spent 500 posts explaining why this is not the News Event of the Century.

I know it seems trite to say that I read a book about it. Though come to think of it, that was more geology than well engineering, but that was discussed at chapter length.

What bothers me is the statistical irregularity of two such incidents within the Gulf occurring within such a short periodicity. Certainly possible, yet I´d think it still a spike in the curve.

This morning i was selling glasses to a family of someone who works on those rigs.

The wife had her cell phone and was trying to reach people down there....to no avail.

Told her that I’d be praying for her husband.

You already know more than I.

I was simply reposting what someone reported on another thread.

Nice to cross paths with you again, BTW. Been a while.

Good point, though the HYPE around the explosion may just as well be the event.

“perception” is reality in politics....
