I’m one Freeper who affirms this law. My wife and I lived three months in an apartment over a smoking woman. It was terrible, and contributed to my wife’s pregnancy nausia. We moved because it was intolerable, even though we had several air filters and spread baking soda everywhere. When you live in a communal situation, you need to be considerate of your community.

Except, apparently, if you smoke. Then, it's always everybody else's fault if they don't like the smell of your cigarettes. Freedom apparently requires the rest of us to put up with having other people stink up our clothes.

Curious as to what other laws you affirm on other people's private property - that being the landlord in this case.

My wife and I lived three months in an apartment over a smoking woman.

was she on fire ;)

It was terrible, and contributed to my wife’s pregnancy nausia.

What other things contributed to her nausea? List them, we'll see if we can get them banned too.

We moved because it was intolerable, even though we had several air filters and spread baking soda everywhere.

Isn't it a great country still? You can move at will - Heck, you can even buy your own house.

When you live in a communal situation, you need to be considerate of your community.

What type of people will you not allow in your community. Never mind, shouldn't have asked that, you were renting, it's not your house and you were just visiting that community.

Apartment (communal living) is different and I can understand to a degree why a law like this would be favored but like another poster pointed out let the private sector take care of it and market it that way. More government is not the answer and never has been and we as conservatives should not back laws that continually intrude & regulate any of our lives.

It’s like a noisy neighbor that no one did anything about and all you can do is move like I did while I even owned the condo outright.Buy a house in the country.

Yes you do but IMO, requiring that someone accommodate only your special wishes is not being considerate. The same arguments that are made about smokers can also apply to the difference between people with children and those without in an apartment complex. If people want to have all these behavior modification rules, they should not live in a community-type environment.

I’m a non smoker and had the same situation.

My solution was to move. It is not my right to tell other people what they can or cannot do in the privacy of their own home.

If I can’t stand it then it is my responsibility to do what is right for me.

My ex-wife used to manage apartments. Ever smelled Curry? Some people, Indians mostly, cook with it for every meal. It’s awful. Wanna ban that also? Where does it end? You already found the solution, you moved. If we left it to the market, there WOULD be non-smoking apatments and you’d be first in line.

“We moved”

Gee willikers, how on earth did you find a solution without government intervention.

“I’m one Freeper who affirms this law.”

Should we not also ban shell fish or peanuts from multi-people dwellings? Those can cause immediate death for some folks.

Soo... because of your one incident, ban the practice everywhere for everybody. Don’t even look at mutual accomodations, just shut’er down. I can tell you’re a moron by your tagline.

If the smoker was there first, then you did the right thing. Moved out. It was her home. She shouldn’t have had to change her lifestyle for you. Did you check before you moved in if it was smoke free or not? Here in Tennessee when they place rental ads, they list smoke free or not. You have a choice.

If you wanted a non-smoking place to live then why was that not one of your questions when first inquiring? I have lived in many apartments and always inquire of that which might concern me of the tenants of those properties I rent from.

When you rent you have to adjust to various habits and such of other tenants. It just goes with the territory of renting. I don’t like late night party animals who bring the bar home with them because they work second shift....so you put fans on and drown out the noise.

If smoking is an issue than you need to be sure ahead of time the other tenants are not smokers....move on to something else if they are.

That is correct.

You should consider being considerate of the smokers in your "community".
