TACOMA, Wash., Aug. 30 (UPI) -- Officials in Washington state say they'll consider moving the health battle over secondhand smoke into a new and contentious arena -- people's homes.
The Tacoma-Pierce County Health Board will consider a proposal next month to classify secondhand smoke as a "nuisance" in multi-unit housing, The Tacoma (Wash.) News Tribune reported Monday.
Backers of the measure say they want it incorporated in the state's landlord-tenant law.
"This is the last piece of the puzzle that needs to be placed," Nan Hogan, who helped write the proposed legislation, said. "We've got smoke-free motel rooms, smoke-free restaurants, smoke-free bars, smoke-free office buildings and even prisons. Why should we go home and have to breathe it there?"
Hogan is a member of the group People United for Smoke-free Housing.
In most multi-family structures, the group says, there is no practical way to seal one apartment from another.

Um. Why the personal attack? That tells me that you’ve lost the argument.
I know what “irony” means. I don’t understand how it applies here.
I went “on a rant”?
No, you haven’t seen me rant.
No. May Christ alone increase.
Man, I hate pompous Papists about as much as I hate careless smokers.
You have not offended me, I am not Catholic, but if I were I guess I'd be real mad a you...;)
Hm. Then if you’re not Roman Catholic, why would you say that Rome should increase, and not Christ alone? Are you familiar with what John the Baptist said to Jesus about his decreasing and His increasing? It’s a pretty biblical concept that Christ alone should be exalted.
(May Rome decrease and Christ increase.)
With this cheering of stripping private property rights of others I assumed you see a need of "Rome" to increase(even if just on the population of dastardly smokers)
I viewed the phrase in a secular(governmental) nature to the conversation on this thread at hand.
This law increases the power of Rome(Government)
“Why not just say youre going to ignore what I said because youre not willing to think about it?”
Hello pot, meet kettle.
“No. May Christ alone increase.”
Unless of course the increase of Rome is of the nature to make your life free of certain odors.
Soo... because of your one incident, ban the practice everywhere for everybody. Don’t even look at mutual accomodations, just shut’er down. I can tell you’re a moron by your tagline.
You’re no conservative. I don’t care how long you’ve been on this site. This lady is living in her apartment, minding her own business, all of a sudden YOU (the grand YOU) move in, and her behavior is atrocious all of a sudden.
Funny, it didn’t seem to bother most people that much at all before you fricking nannie-ninnies came along. Go play by yourself.
YEah, that's a great example as you have yuppies like r9etd and theo moving to the country, and then getting ANGRY that they have to deal with dust and manure smell, and demanding that the farmers get rid of their livestock.
Yup us smokers told you it was coming.. next up will be what kind of foods you can eat in your own home.
If it were my apartment and I was living there, I would smoke and flat out ignore the law. Screw them. Civil Disobedience time.
Thankfully I own my own home so I am safe.. for a tiny little bit longer.. or until people stand up to these tyrants.
No, I’m saying rights do not pertain to gratifying some individual’s peculiarities. If you grow roses, and I’m alergic to them (and some people are) I do not have a right to have the government force you to take out your roses.
I’m sorry you have a sensitive nose, but it’s your problem, not anyone else’s, and you have no right foisting your problem on others.
Here’s the principle of rights. There are only rights to do, there are no rights to have anything (except to have the wealth you have earned—by doing something productive). There is no right to have a job, medical care, education, or even food. There is no right to have an environment you like, which someone else has to provide.
Rights mean no one may interfere in your life to prevent you from living it as you choose, as long as you do not inerfere in anyone else’s—by the use or threat of force.
Anything else meant by “rights” requires the oppression of others and actually violates rights. Period.
Hank
Indeed, Hank.... Indeed.
I would suggest that your tobacco smoke wafting onto my clothes qualifies exactly.
You rented the apartment unseen, and yet you blame her for ruining your experience. Your bad decision (to rent unseen) is the ause of your lack of knowledge of the issue (her smoke - which would be evident even if she weren’t at the apartment when you looked if it is half as bad as you indicate).
That is the epitome of irony.
Stupid, although I wouldn’t want people smoking in my multi-unit housing due to the fire risk.
By federal law, all cigarettes self-extinguish after a very short period of time.
