NEW YORK Will the Republican Party follow Ken Mehlmans lead and step out on gay rights? Historian Timothy McCarthy imagines a future where the GOP starts talking like Harvey Milk.
Every queer knows that some of the biggest homophobes are closet cases. Simply recall the names of Mark Foley, Ted Haggard, Larry Craig, or George rent-boy Rekers. The latest Republican to move from the closet to the Log Cabin is Ken Mehlman, the architect of George W. Bushs successful 2004 reelection campaign and former chairman of the Republican National Committee. Judging by the current political climate, Mehlmans coming out may not be an aberration for Republicans. It could actually point the way toward its future.
Last week, Mehlman, whose lifestyle has long been an open secret in Washington, made waves by finally acknowledging his homosexuality to The Atlantics Marc Ambinder. Its taken me 43 years to get comfortable with this part of my life, Mehlman said. Everybody has their own path to travel, their own journey
In coming out, Mehlman also joined a growing chorus of GOP power playersamong them Dick Cheney, Laura Bush, and former McCain campaign adviser Steve Schmidtwho now say they support the right of same-sex couples to get married. But Mehlman is going even further, raising money and assisting one of the main groups responsible for the (so far) successful court challenge to Californias anti-gay Proposition 8 ...

“Will the Republican Party follow Ken Mehlmans lead and step out on gay rights?”
They do and they will do it without me.
they suck.
They do and they will do it without me.
I second that notion
Whatever happened to you people just wanting to come out of the closet?? That was sick enough. Give and inch take 10 miles. Judgement day is coming. GO BACK IN THE CLOSET. DEMORALIZATION=first steps of communism.Take the illegal muslim fraud in the whitehouse with you, evidently this is his sick game also,
And I third it! In a Conservative Christian Republican party, there is no room for homosexuals. While I know plenty of Conservative homosexuals, even they're quick to point out how they're unwelcome in the Evangelical caucus.
Homosexual Republican is a contradiction.
great tag-team post :-)
The day the Republicans officially join the Democrats in pandering to the squalid grievance industry, which is dividing and ripping the country apart, is the day I will register with a third party.
No, the right doesn't need them. We're much better off if they remain a burden for the left instead.
The LORD does not look at the things man looks at. Man looks at the outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart.
George W.Bush won re-election in 2004 IN SPITE of Ken Mehlman. Mehlman continued to dismantle the GOP and drove conservatives away so John McCain, Rudy Giuliani or some other RINO could win the nomination. He managed to do that, and the result is Barack Obama. Thank Ken Mehlman.
The GOP will become a party of "special interest" groups at it's peril!
Sounds more and more like there is a major divide in this country between conservatives and liberals (read: people who believe in our founders' vision of America and those who don't.)
Hell no!
Well this should be an interesting thread....I heard the distant pounding of running feet as the FR apologetics prepare to type out all the virtues of gays and how their lifestyle doesn’t bother them etc etc.... I’ll get the popcorn prepared
No, do not the let the degenerates take over the leadership of the GOP. Instead, focus on purging them from the ranks. Let them know that they will be voted out in PRIMARIES if they continue on this path. Do not give in to the queers, No Retreat, No Surrender!
Conservatives are having to fight a lot of different paths of attack from the left.
Democrat-Republican is obvious, but this new drive for “libertarianism”, “fiscal conservatism only” “call a truce on social conservatism until we solve our problems”, etc, is the marriage of a blatant “left wing, anti-social conservatism/anti-religion, economics only” fifth column with the old “indifferent to social concerns, economic only” Rockefeller/Romney wing of the GOP.
