LDS Bishop shot to death in California Church
Salt Lake Tribune ^ | August 29th, 2010 | Associated Press

Posted on 08/30/2010 6:33:31 AM PDT by Jenny Hatch

Visalia, Calif. • A Mormon church official was shot dead between services on Sunday, and less than an hour later, the man suspected of the crime also died after a shootout with police.

Clay Sannar, 42, a lay bishop with the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Visalia, southeast of Fresno, died after being shot in his office, said Visalia police chief Colleen Mestas.

Soon after the first shooting, a caller identified himself to police as the shooter. Police responded, and there was a confrontation with several shots exchanged, said Mestas.

The suspect was hit multiple times. He was taken to nearby Kaweah Delta Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead. He has not been identified yet. No officers were injured, Mestas said.

Tulare County sheriff’s deputies are taking over the investigation of the shootout involving the police officers. The sheriff’s department did not immediately return calls for comment.

Visalia police continue to investigate Sannar’s shooting, but have not identified a motive.

Really!

Have I accused or I had I wonder who is behind those cyber walls?

Would that not be reasonable to wonder after all the Vitriolic talk posted here towards the LDS?

The careful teachings of the Gospel of Jesus Christ do NOT lead to acts of violent retribution.

Plenty of Christians that lived and died in WW2 would probably argue your comment.

....that is called an “observation”...

Just for my future reference, must I include name-calling and baseless insults when I make an observation or are they optional? Even though you've obviously taken another path, I'd just as soon not use them and discuss the issues without demonizing those on the other side.

You little confused act has played out Resty.

You are as guilty as your peers on this thread.

Quit while you are behind.

Or continue and in your own way serve the good of the Truth with your ramblings.

resty, take a breath. Your postings have seemed pretty uptight lately...

Saundra specified praying for the bishop’s family and friends and left out the other victim’s family. I suggested she should add that. She said it went without saying. Seemed strange that she’d mention one side and not the other and then say it went without saying. Frankly, it was weird. Hence my comment.

As for you resty, please take this prescription for stress...

eat more ice cream
laugh occasionally
have a nice blackberry sangria
smile - if even at yourself in a mirror

tell yourself there is much to enjoy in life, despite
your circumstances.

best,
ampu

We need to pray for the widow, the children, the extended family, friends and the LDS family.
__________________________________________

While I can understand the call for prayer for the

“the widow, the children, the extended family,”

Why “the friends and the LDS family”

Are they likely to take to streets with guns killing “anti-mormons” or something ???

What need of parayer do 13,000,000 mormons around the world who have never heard of the guy that was killed, have for prayer at this time that does not concern or effect them ???

Did you pray for me and every other Christian around the world the last time a Christian was murdered...

How about the little 9 year old Moslem girl that was stoned to death last week ???

Did you pray for the one billion strong Moslem family ???

...surely not how the sweet spirit of the Lord would counsel one to do.

Hypocrisy that knows no bounds from someone whose "sweet spirit" has been on display on FR for years.

The Church has responded with love, compassion, forgiveness, and kindness. I am very proud to be a member of this Church which has Jesus Christ at the Head.

When a tragedy like this occurs, like the shooting @ the church in Texas, or the shooting @ the church in Colorado, what church doesn't rally around the victims with love, compassion, forgiveness and kindness?

What is unique is for one of these church bodies to actually take pride in rallying around the victims -- as if that wasn't something other than normal love & servanthood.

Somehow, Saundra, I sense a different attitude between So you also, when you have done everything you were told to do, should say, 'We are unworthy servants; we have only done our duty.'" (Jesus, Luke 17:10) vs. somebody boasting in their good works on behalf of victims -- boasting with words, I am very proud...

Good points. It does seem that lds do a lot of prideful boasting about all they do rather than quietly going about doing the good work. They make sure as many people as possible know what they do.

This is about a tragic situation where an innocent Bishop was murdered by a mentally ill anti Mormon

Wait a minute. Didn't that murderer's Mormon baptism take?

If it didn't take, then how are we to know if a Mormon proxy baptism will "take" on the other side?

What if Mormons proxy baptize a dead murderer? Which trumps what -- the act of murder or the baptism? (And if you say, Saundra, the baptism, then this murderer was obviously still a baptized Mormon when he committed murder)

Hi Colofornian,

Baptism only benefits anyone if it is done in the proper spirit “without hypocrisy and without guile”

And it is possible for to fall from Grace after being baptized.

As far as baptism for the dead is concerned, it is a gift we offer to someone who has died — but it is up to them whether they accept it or not.

Regards,

Normandy

I thought I read in the paper that the killer had demanded that his name be removed from the roles of the Church. Not sure what that has to do with anything, though.

A wonderful innocent Bishop is dead, leaving behind a grieving wife and six boys, and a devastated community.

The killer’s family is in our prayers, too, as they are also grieving and hurting.

What point are you trying to make?

“This man was a former anti member and like a scab he would not leave it alone”

Such moving compassion, resty...

****

He identified himself as an anti-Mormon.

What if the killer was a former mormon with a temple recommendation, but he left because somehow he got it yet the lds would not remove his name from the roles and he broke and killed the fellow.

Does he then lose his baptism?

What about all those people he was dead dunked for, do they have to be re dead dunked.

I mean did everything he did before this horrible act become void.

It is so complicated when you teach you are responsible for an others sin and you have to work for salvation.

“what church doesn’t rally around the victims with love, compassion, forgiveness and kindness? “

None that I know of. In fact, I’m sure that the other Churches are rallying around the Bishop’s family, too, and I thank God for it.

This is bizarre. Of course all Christians should pray for victims of violence and abuse. Did you think otherwise? Oh, I forgot, you don’t think I’m a Christian because I’m a Mormon even though I have told you that I would shout it from the rooftops that Jesus Christ is my personal Savior, Lord, and Soon Coming King.
