NYT: At Lincoln Memorial, a Call for Religious Rebirth (Crowd Estimate)
New York Sl/imes ^ | 8/28/2010 | KATE ZERNIKE and CARL HULSE

WASHINGTON — An enormous and impassioned crowd rallied at the steps of the Lincoln Memorial on Saturday, summoned by Glenn Beck, a conservative broadcaster who called for a religious rebirth in America at the site where the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. delivered his famous “I Have a Dream” speech 47 years ago to the day.

“Something that is beyond man is happening,” Mr. Beck said in opening the event as the crowd thronged near the memorial grounds. “America today begins to turn back to God.”

It was part religious revival, part history lecture, as Mr. Beck invoked the founding fathers and the “black-robed regiment” of pastors of the Revolutionary War and spoke of American exceptionalism.

-snip-

Officials do not make crowd estimates because they are unreliable and can be controversial, but event organizers put the number of attendees at 500,000; NBC News said it was closer to 300,000, but by any measure it was a large turnout. The crowd stretched from the Lincoln Memorial to the Washington Monument.

It is amazing how some are so brain-washed by the media. So sad. My neighbor found out that I went to the Restore America Rally and could not wait to catch me when I returned to express her feelings about those who are racists, religious nuts and war mongers. When I explained that the Rally was color blind, only repeated what are Founding Fathers stated about our Creator and collected a large donation for the children of our Military. Her face was one of shock. Her brain could not absorb the realization that what she heard on the news was wrong. I believe the Restoring has begun.

Oh.

OK. I feel better.

I was referring to clicking through to give the New York Times or Journ0List reporters my time or revenue from cookies anymore. It doesn’t mean that I don’t want to read what the enemedia says. I just don’t want to provide them with any revenue at all.

So, someone will have to take one for me to get the info someplace I will read. FR is key. Atlas Shrugs, Michelle Malkin, Beck, Rush, Breitbart, Drudge, sometimes Hannity. YouTube sometimes.

I don’t want to give the enemedia one more dime if I can help it. I know this is a diluted approach and I should keep up with their ‘thought’ news. Like a good Sicilian: keep your enemies closer.

“I don’t know what your soteriology/eschatology is, but I’m sort of a 1689 Baptist Confession of Faith sort of person. With that in view, In John’s Gospel we are told that the Father chooses which people will be saved and “given” to the Son. In 2 Peter 3 we read that our LORD will return when the last of the elect is redeemed.”

Greetings, again, Theophilus!

I’ve re-read your complete post. I admit ignorance about the 1689 Baptist Confession of Faith—perhaps you would be kind enough to enlighten me?

I cannot respond beyond the above quoted portion of your comments until I more clearly understand your points. May I pose a few questions to help me receive further clarification?

Questions:

“In John’s Gospel we are told that the Father chooses which people will be saved and “given” to the Son.”

Are you referring to John 10:1-30?

“In 2 Peter 3 we read that our LORD will return when the last of the elect is redeemed.””

Are you referring to this passage?

II Peter 3: 7-9

7 But the heavens and the earth which are now preserved by the same word, are reserved for fire until the day of judgment and perdition of ungodly men.
8 But, beloved, do not forget this one thing, that with the Lord one day is as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day. 9 The Lord is not slack concerning His promise, as some count slackness, but is longsuffering toward us, not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance.

Additionally, in order to help you with where I am coming from, allow me to address this statement,

“”I don’t know what your soteriology/eschatology is,”

Please do not misunderstand what I am about to say. It is not meant to be a flippant statement, although I do understand why you might interpret it as such, but please trust me when I say...

I really only follow what the Bible says. That is my soteriology/eschatology. When I highlight a passage to support a point, I have taken into consideration the context in which that passage occurs. I see the Bible as one complete message with no contradictions and all sufficient for what is necessary in order to be in fellowship with God.

I realize if we continue our conversation, we will be moving in a completely different direction from where I started in #220, but if that is what you would like to do, I will be glad to join in. Though, if you see you don’t have time to move in this direction, I will respect that as well.

Blessings for your day!
Daisy

I was referring just to a technicality. Would you not agree that a bird is diferent than a rock? And that birds are created by God? I don’t mean thay are divine, I mean they have a spark of life from God.

I have many thoughts on universal truth, but I think you are searching to correct anything that deviates from scripture, and not searching for truth.

A lot of people don't know the Bible.

And there are a lot of confused people out there.

And a lot of them are Catholics.

Are rocks NOT created by God?

I didn’t say rocks were not created by God. I said birds have a spark of life that rocks do not have, which is from God. Do you not wish to address that point?

“I didn’t say rocks were not created by God. I said birds have a spark of life that rocks do not have, which is from God. Do you not wish to address that point?”

You brought up rocks in relation to birds. So the ball is still in your court until you clarify what “the spark of life” is. You seem to be saying that you know, and even though God created both birds and rocks with the same “let there be...”, because birds breath, they have something different related to life than rocks do. What is that difference? What is this “spark” you speak of? Surely you would not attempt to define what “life” is according to God (that is what we are talking about when we talk about a bird that breaths is live, and a rock that doesn’t breath is dead) without consulting His Word on the matter. Where can I read about it in the Bible? Please tell me how you know.

I noticed you carefully avoided the question, “is scripture NOT truth?” Why would you avoid this question and instead opt to talk about birds and rocks? Could it be that you don’t think scripture is the ONLY truth? Will you put your cards on the table, or continue to hold them close?

It is true that Glenn did bill the event as a sort of religious revival. But a revival in the same sense of the word that our founding fathers used phraseology such as "endowed by our creator" and "God-given rights".

When our FF used those terms, they were understood within the framework of the Christian Trinity, not mormon polytheism. Both views will yield different end results when the logic is applied to them. Nor were those terms used in the same method as this rally. Be careful comparing the two to avoid apples to oranges scenarios.

And Glenn Beck didn't organize this event on behalf of Mormons in America, but to turn all Americans back to the values which made us great.

Once again, Beck's mormon theological world view guides his speech and methodology to achieve this turn around. True to mormon doctrine that man can become righteous, he said we must turn the country around, throughly blended and mixed with pop politics. The Christian world view that the FF would have mostly held is that the change must be in us - a changed and repentant being - then God will work to right the wrongs in the land. Is pride what is needed, or deep repentance across the country? Christianity says a changed heart will result in a changed country.

And Glenn Beck didn't organize this event on behalf of Mormons in America, but to turn all Americans back to the values which made us great.

When Beck includes in his religiously grounded speech stories from the book of mormon and alledges that they are historically accuate, that is defacto evidence that he was trying to get non-mormons to investigate it further. By doing so, he invited examination of the claims of the bom, the historicity of which has been shown be false over and over again.

Again, I think Beck is sincere in his wanting America to be great. But when he injects as historical events from a work of fiction, then I have to question his reasoning for the rest of it.

Peeling off a particular religious sect for cheap shots in an event of this nature is akin to marginalizing our founding fathers because you do not agree with their particular brand of religion or the fact that they had personal imperfections.

Again, by his own actions Beck injected his mormonistic worldviews into the event, whirrled them together with populist politics and put it all together. However, though I recognize that the FF had different views on religion, they were together on that the foundations of monotheistic Christianity, and polytheistic mormonism would be foreign to them. Beck put his 'flavor' on the table for examination - I don't agree with it and I think it may well have tainted the entire event. These are not 'cheap shots' but valid observations because Beck placed them into the national spotlight.

The Buddhist in China that goes his entire life living his religion because it’s the only religion he’s ever been taught or had access to. He never even hears of Jesus Christ let alone has the chance to accept Him before he dies. Does he have a chance to get into Christ’s kingdom according to YOU?

Reno, we're closer than you've been led to believe on this Q. For example, if I framed the Q to you: The illiterate pagan that went his entire life living his religion in the pre-Gutenberg area of the world where his tribe kept no records of his existence. He never even hears of Jesus Christ let alone has the chance to accept Him before he dies. Given that records seekers & genealogists will never find a smidgen that this person even existed, does he have a chance to get into Christ’s kingdom minus a Mormon proxy baptism according to YOU?

(And if you think the answer is "yes" -- that he can circumvent the Mormon proxy baptism system, then why go to the extreme effort to find such records, put them in a computer database, perform the temple rituals, etc.?)

“Beck put his ‘flavor’ on the table for examination -”

I observed what you did while watching the event. It seemed as if Mr. Beck combined various theological perspectives in order to appeal to the masses. I think his intent was honorable, but I am concerned that the logical conclusion, if God’s hand is absent from this process, is that the end result will be a collective religion for a collective salvation, which would put Mr. Beck in the position of being Obama’s right hand man! Ironic—but the danger exists.
