NYT: At Lincoln Memorial, a Call for Religious Rebirth (Crowd Estimate)

WASHINGTON — An enormous and impassioned crowd rallied at the steps of the Lincoln Memorial on Saturday, summoned by Glenn Beck, a conservative broadcaster who called for a religious rebirth in America at the site where the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. delivered his famous “I Have a Dream” speech 47 years ago to the day.

“Something that is beyond man is happening,” Mr. Beck said in opening the event as the crowd thronged near the memorial grounds. “America today begins to turn back to God.”

It was part religious revival, part history lecture, as Mr. Beck invoked the founding fathers and the “black-robed regiment” of pastors of the Revolutionary War and spoke of American exceptionalism.

Officials do not make crowd estimates because they are unreliable and can be controversial, but event organizers put the number of attendees at 500,000; NBC News said it was closer to 300,000, but by any measure it was a large turnout. The crowd stretched from the Lincoln Memorial to the Washington Monument.

Across town, several hundred people packed a football field at Paul Laurence Dunbar High School to stage a rally commemorating Dr. King’s “I Have a Dream” speech.

“We come here because the dream has not been achieved,” said the Rev. Al Sharpton, an organizer of the rally. “We’ve had a lot of progress. But we have a long way to go.”

“They want to disgrace this day,” Mr. Sharpton told the crowd, referring to Mr. Beck’s event.

The "Sharpton Pity Party" as one FReeper called it, apparently didn't have much of a turnout.

While a religious rebirth is important, i want my money back that went into a welfare state pit, retribution on all polititians responsible, illegals extracted by the scruff of their necks and the federal government cut out like the cancerous tumor that it is.

....but Beck's a mormon.

I cringe when he mentions God..........because Joe Smith called Christianity an "ABOMINATION".

The mormons are nice folks......but they are not Christian. So that's where it all gets very bizarre.

For Pete’s sake let it go. Becks one of the good guys. You can get your panties in a wad when Beck says that about Christianity.

Good for Mr Beck.

I’m sure during his darkest hour of despair he never imaged the positive influence he now has on Liberty loving people today.

I actually thought the article was ok...shockingly ...

Of course their usual suspects will make up for it with the hit pieces we all expect.

A friend of mine said the closest she got was the WWII Memorial....that tells me it was probably 500,000.....I had to crack up earlier when ABC was claiming 87,000....they finally bit the bullet and said it was in the “100s of thousands”....and don’t you know that put their panties in a wad!!!!

I don’t remember for sure, but I think it was on Beck’s TV show that I heard him say he became a Mormon when he married his wife. I think he said he was raised as an evangelical Christian, and his “converting” to Mormonism was the only way she would consent to marry him.

Beck was a Catholic; a member of the True Church and he turned his back to join a cult.

So tragically sad.

” event organizers put the number of attendees at 500,000; NBC News said it was closer to 300,000,”

So when are the rest of news outlets including Fox, going to start saying hundreds of thousands insted of tens of thousands?

Beck’s gathering today was not about Mormonism.
Please don’t dwell on it.

Have some class.
