Oikophobia - Why the liberal elite finds Americans revolting.
WSJ Opinion Journal ^ | August 27, 2010 | JAMES TARANTO

Posted on 08/28/2010 11:32:55 AM PDT by Neil E. Wright

If you think it's offensive for a Muslim group to exploit the 9/11 atrocity, you're an anti-Muslim bigot and un-American to boot. It is a claim so bizarre, so twisted, so utterly at odds with common sense that it's hard to believe anyone would assert it except as some sort of dark joke. Yet for the past few weeks, it has been put forward, apparently in all seriousness, by those who fancy themselves America's best and brightest, from the mayor of New York all the way down to Peter Beinart.

What accounts for this madness? Charles Krauthammer notes a pattern:

Promiscuous charges of bigotry are precisely how our current rulers and their vast media auxiliary react to an obstreperous citizenry that insists on incorrect thinking.
-- Resistance to the vast expansion of government power, intrusiveness and debt, as represented by the Tea Party movement? Why, racist resentment toward a black president.
-- Disgust and alarm with the federal government's unwillingness to curb illegal immigration, as crystallized in the Arizona law? Nativism.
-- Opposition to the most radical redefinition of marriage in human history, as expressed in Proposition 8 in California? Homophobia.
-- Opposition to a 15-story Islamic center and mosque near Ground Zero? Islamophobia.
Now we know why the country has become "ungovernable," last year's excuse for the Democrats' failure of governance: Who can possibly govern a nation of racist, nativist, homophobic Islamophobes?

Krauthammer portrays this as a cynical game: "Note what connects these issues. In every one, liberals have lost the argument in the court of public opinion. . . . What's a liberal to do? Pull out the bigotry charge, the trump that preempts debate and gives no credit to the seriousness and substance of the contrary argument."

Our would-be rulers despise Americans — that’s why they let in 20 million Mexican invaders.

The Left’s non-stop barrage of calling people who disagree with them “bigots” or “racists” isn’t working anymore (if it ever really did).
It will be interesting to see what terminology they come up with next. Whatever words they use won’t work either.

Krauthammer nails it again. AS if we need more evidence or convincing that the dims are attempting to manipulate the electorate... and succeeding in most / many cases.

I don't know that I'd characterize the administration's attitude as one of "hate" for the American people. It is more one of indifference. The socialists have an agenda to advance and historically, that agenda has been resisted by the inertia of the middle class, just as it is being resisted by the American middle class today. To overcome that inertia, the administration must simply overrule the prevailing bourgeois sentiment and advance their agenda without regard to public opinion.

The attitude doesn't rise to the level of hate; to hate someone, you have to at least respect their ability to thwart you. In Obama's case, the public is simply one more nuisance, a detour on his way to the Workers Paradise. His disdain is founded on disregard, not antipathy.

We're not important enough to hate.

Nothing is more annoying than being talked down to by people who’ve never been above you.

I’m about 150 pages into “MiG Pilot” by John Barron, the story of Victor Belenko and his defection to Japan in his MiG-25. Lots of parallels between how the USSR is run and how the Democrats want to run America (not that the business-as-usual Republicans have been any kind of shining star here). Don’t think, the state will tell you how and what to think. Just shut up and do what you’re told.

Oikophobia:

coined by the British philosopher Roger Scruton, is here used as a non-clinical description of an ‘anti-culture’ prevalent among Western artists and intellectuals. It is a combination of:

oikos - from the Greek meaning a “house,” “family,” “people,” or “nation” – Encyclopaedia Britannica

and

-phobia
(combining form) extreme or irrational fear or dislike of a specified thing or group

I disagree with that. They do hate us . . . alot. That’s why they react with childish namecalling and outlandish statements. They’re getting angrier and angrier. Just look at the faces (I know, it’s unbearable, but) of Olbie, Schultz, Oscar Mayer Weiner, Waters et al. They know we’re a threat and this is how they react to it. They’re “smilin faces” when no one objects but once their game is exposed, they lash out because the truth is killing them and they know it.

Calling people names for disageeing has mostly definitely worked in the past, and now that it’s no longer working and IMHO working exactly in reverse, the left is having a meltdown. Now they actually have to win an argument with facts and ideas (not exactly playing to the Left’s strengths!) instead of “winning” arguments by default when people were too cowed to disagree in fear of being called homophobic, xenophobic/nativist, Islamophobic (the “new” racist), sexist, etc. It’s fun to watch the heads of lefties explode when they see that calling people names doesn’t make them the “winners” of the argument at hand.

I agree with much that Kraut has written but I would add this:

We have developed an aristocratic class that presumes to set the rules for politics and culture without the input of the peasants. And make no mistake about it, we are regarded as the unwashed peasants.

I also see a tension between the Liberal Arts (the East) and the hard sciences (the Midwest). They publish books by great thinkers, meet in salons to speak of the current social situation and talk, talk, talk about it. They handle money and mishandle government.

We (the Midwest) put people on the moon, build bombers, drill for oil in nearly impossible technical situations, invent and build computers, develop hybrids and genetically modified grains and fruits and fertilizers that are responsible for the survival of a large part of the world’s population, produce doctors and researchers who materially extend the limits of medicine and who have materially exotend the life span of the world’s population.

The world has become too technical for the elites to run. Their understanding of not just human limits but human potential is nearly 100 years behind and it reflects the view held in the 30s.

If they fail to adapt they will, as all other species, die off. We are watching the beginning of the great extinction of this noxious species now.

They are an artifact of the 19th and 20th centuries.
