Pence: No personal attacks against Obama or Dems
The Hill's Blog Briefing Room ^ | 08/18/10 | Michael O'Brien

Republicans shouldn't engage in personal attacks against President Obama or other Democrats on the campaign trail, a top House Republican said Wednesday.

Conference Chairman Mike Pence (Ind.) pressed his party to attack ideas with which they disagree, but to avoid attacking opponents during an election cycle that has been noted for its heated rhetoric.

Mike represents my state and I really like him, but I'm not so sure about this position. The GOP has played Nice Guy far too long. It's time to take off the gloves and start kicking opponents in sprouts. If I were running against Harry Reid, I wouldn't hesitate to run ads showing this dufus trying to tell people federal income taxes are voluntary.

Do you think the Dems play fair? Brad Ellsworth is running for reelection here and, to see his ads, he makes it appear that he's never been in office. He talks about how he will fight the special interest groups, but he's taken more PAC money than you can shake a stick at. His opponent needs to runs ads showing his voting record, his PAC money, and clearly stating that he's part of the problem, not a solution. (I have seen one ad run against Ellsworth once, but can seem to find it anywhere.)

Nope...it's time to take off the gloves and take this country back from the libs...

So calling Obama anti-American or calling Charlie Rangel a tax-cheat is considered a personal attack

Apparently.

Alinsky advised his followers to personalize the issues. Nancy Pelosi came to power by talking about the "Culture of Corruption". She named names: Tom Delay, Mark Foley, etc. This approach has worked very well for the Democrats.

Republicans, however, can decide to take the High Road and just talk about principles. That's what Bob Dole did. That's what John McCain did. I'm pretty sure that's what Mitt Romney would do.

GOP should stick to a sound, logical, conservative argument, and they will win hands down.

GOP "Candidates."

Not talking about the Republicans on the street.

Let Obama talk about the WTC Mosque all week.

And let the Dem candidates talk about it for the next month.

Republican candidates should be talking about jobs, the (non)stimulus, bailouts, ethics in the House, etc.

Had we taken off the gloves 6+ years ago, there would not be a NEED to take the country back from the libs! Idiots all!

I got a picture of the stout-hearted GOPers repealing ObamaCare if they take the House and Senate, don't you?

Most people will not vote for you simply because you are good at attacking the other guy. In reality, it often hurts a candidate to do that.

No offense, but have you watched any election in the past thirty years? It is all about attacking you competitor. Feel good stuff doesn't win elections. Yes, an alternative must be presented, but that does not win elections. Both sides are focused on their opponent, and they do so because that is how elections are won. The Dems are ONLY in power because they relentlessly attacked everyone on the right for the past 10 years.

This halfazzed backwards goody mentality is exactly what got us into this mess to begin with.

We are less safe as Americans when these politicians refuse to secure our borders, refuse to expel the illegal invaders, and use our military as the guinea pig for their pet social experiments.

I have been labelled a racist because of my Tea Party affiliation, and intolerant because I oppose the building of a mosque on the remains of 3,000 murder victims.

I have been accused of “not paying my fair share”, when the reality is, I pay more than my fair share & the non-producer’s fair share, too.

My job is going away, as my boss is about to go bankrupt.

My home is under attack via ever increasing property taxes

My healthcare is about to cost more and be virtually useless.

My childrens’ futures have been jeopardized due to the irresponsible spending & policies of these politicians.

The time for civilized debate has long past.

It IS personal, & the fact that Mike Pence doesn’t get it just proves he’s another Republican squish who wants us to sit back and take it.

Pence is now the poster child for why there needs to be a COMPLETE change in the House was well as massive change in the Senate.

Pence has lived inside the beltway long enough to become inflected with the log rolling mentality. Never offend anyone because you need their vote for your project.

If I want dimocrat-lite I will vote for the dimocrats. I want something else so the Republican Party must provide me with a reason to advocate their position.

The first way to do this is to offer me a clear alternative.
The second way is to show how the current policy has failed, will fail, and can never succeed.
The final way is to show that the current crop of leaders cannot and will not change their failed policies.

Good ideas are forged in the heat of debate. Remember climate-gate was the result of a very limited consensus of opinion and since it was “established science” there was no need for further debate.

Echos of Pres. Bush’s “new tone” when he took office. That really paid off with the Lefties, didn’t it?

IMO candidates need to stay above the fray. Ethics in government is a legitimate topic. And so is the WTC mosque, if it is handled well.

Not Good (even though correct): Obama cares more about Muslims than he does about the victims of 9/11.

Better: The president needs to show leadership by bringing both sides together and find a solution, one that allows people to practice their faith in a way that is not offensive to the families of the victims of 9/11.

I get Pence’s position here: “Don’t create an “obama-as-victim” narrative, because we all know the SRM is looking for it. However, attack and destroy obama’s ideas all day long, because he’s giving us a target-rich environment in that area.
