WASHINGTON (AFP) – Israel has "eight days" to launch a military strike against Iran's Bushehr nuclear facility and stop Tehran from acquiring a functioning atomic plant, a former US envoy to the UN has said.

Iran is to bring online its first nuclear power reactor, built with Russia's help, on August 21, when a shipment of nuclear fuel will be loaded into the plant's core.

At that point, John Bolton warned Monday, it will be too late for Israel to launch a military strike against the facility because any attack would spread radiation and affect Iranian civilians.

Kinda makes you wonder if they deliberately put it there on the coast in a vulnerable spot, as in, what else do they have up their sleeve if Israel hit's that nuke plant.

I think they needed a ready water supply, and of course the ability to bring construction materials in by ship. Plus they wanted the plant to be away from people.

I have a feeling there’s a desalination plant nearby as well.

In short, I don’t think we need look further than simple logistics for reasons why this nuclear plant is where it is. A lot of nuke plants are by the sea.

Thanks for that kmz file, which is fascinating. It shows that the Iranians have maybe 40 AA sites along that coast, the majority of it located behind berms around the target site and also Bushehr airport and naval base.

The geography (of course) dictates that none of the AA is along the IAF’s approach vector. I don’t know what range you can get with standoff kinetic-kill weapons, but I have a feeling that the IAF - and some FReepers - do.
