Officers moved in before dawn to seal off the squatter camp, where the local authorities had installed water standpipes and chemical lavatories near the central city of Saint Etienne. The operation took several hours.
Shortly after launching his measures aimed at gipsies, Mr Sarkozy announced plans to target members of other minority groups, promising to strip French nationality from certain categories of foreign-born criminals.
Opinion polls this week showed that 79 per cent of voters approved of measures to dismantle the camps. Similar majorities backed other aspects of his law and order policy.
Mr Sarkozy has pledged that those foreign gipsies who had committed crimes would be deported to their countries of origin - mainly Romania.
There are estimated to be 15,000 gipsies and Roma of Eastern European origin in France. Some live in authorised encampments, but many are in squatter camps or abandoned buildings.

Practice on the Gypsies before moving on to the Muslims, one hopes.
That's the real question ~ besides the obvious one of why we have the sight of a head of state of a major world state targeting a 19,000 strong MINORITY GROUP for special law enforcement attention.
You could get 100 times that number of illegal aliens if you simply rousted the nation's restaurants and began shipping out the busboys, and chefs' helpers to their countries of origin.
Here's a possibility for you though ~ to Swedes half the French probably look like Gypsies ~ dark, with noses, strange clothes, Bwahahahahahahaha!
Europe of today is swamped by immigrants from former colonies.
Many of them are uneducated, several of them are Muslims and furthermore, many of them refuse to adopt to Western ways of life.
There is only one solution to this problem:
Give them their land back and SEND them back to it!
Shipping out 19,000 Gypsies is the equivalent of rounding up the stray Irish visa overstays and shipping the out.

- If you told that to a French cook’s face, you would get beaten up beyond belief.
Try and find a really well run restaurant in an “ordinary”, non-tourist town of 25 000 inhabitants or so outside countries like France, Italy or Spain.

Honestly, I don’t believe that.
But if you like the food you get where you live I won’t argue.
I don’t live in Paris, but where I live there’s probably better food at better prices than in most cities anywhere around this World.

Yeah, small town ~ the local SMSA has something like 3.75 million people. We have French chefs coming out our ears.

I’m guessing you missed the 60 minutes or whatever news show it was years ago that did a segment on the organized gangs from Eastern Europe (think Yugoslavia and Romania back then) that used groups of young teenagers to rob and pickpocket.
They showed some of the kids in action, one neat one where the police caught some suspects but the move the loot so fast there was no evidence. One young teenage girl was searched on film and she just pulled her top off, no bra, to show the police she didn’t have anything. Probably being molested at night by her home country “handlers” like most.
I gave up on these “news” shows after NBC faked that pickup gas tank explosion.

We are the only nation to have laid siege to all of Germany.
To me as as a Viking, Europe is a kindergarten we never seem to get an IKEA grip of.
Seems like no one else on this forum has got anything else to yap about anymore in connection to this matter.
Therefore, I simply conclude this stronghold of democratic values wholeheartedly supports Sarkozy - one of the few Western leaders of today who dares to stand up for true Western values.
