What a load of crap. It’s evidence of the guilt that the North still bears for the war crimes inflicted upon the Southern population by the Yankee aggressors that prompts this kind of a response.

I strongly suspect that the number of Southern civilians injured by Confederate war crimes was lot more than those injured by Yankee actions. The Lost Cause myth totally ignores the oppressive nature of the Confederate regime towards its own population. A lot of Southerners owed their lives to the arrival of the Union army liberators.

You need to read some different books on the subject. I wouldn’t be surprised if you would find out that some of your southern ancestors were Union sympathizers or even Union soldiers. Now wouldn’t that be something for you to be proud about?

I wouldn’t be surprised if you would find out that some of your southern ancestors were Union sympathizers traitors or even Union turncoat soldiers.

There, fixed it.

I’ve read alot of ridiculous, trumped up stuff northerners pass of as history where the War of Northern Aggression is concerned but this one takes the cake.

“Both sides had access to rapid fire weapons, neither side used them.”

You made me learn something today:

Battle of 7 pines — Williams breech-loading

Battle of Petersburg -— Gatlin gun

Agar Machine gun used multiple times.

Incidentally, the mobile Confederate "government" - or what was left of it - approved of the terms of the Sherman-Johnston pact. No mention in the book, though, about its terms regarding slavery.

I'm sure the Confederate government approved of it, since it explicitly allowed Confederates to retain their "property," which could have been interpreted to include slaves.

Aside from that Sherman treated Johnston and his men very well, including feeding them. Johnston never forgot. He died after standing bare-headed in the rain at Sherman's funeral.

Rapid fire weapons were of no consequence during the Civil War. Some experimentation, nothing major.

For someone “not that important to even care about” you sure are working overtime to try to convince me that you are not a complete boob. So far it hasn’t been an epic failure - just a dismal one LOL

“. Some experimentation, nothing major.”

I don’t disagree. But distinct from “neither used them.”

So you wouldn’t deny having ancestors who wore the Blue, but that makes them lessor in your mind?

Very interesting article, an eye-opener for this public schooled Yankee. I love the Revolutionary war history but haven’t gotten into the Civil War, yet.

I wouldn’t be surprised

You wouldn't be surprised. You suspect. But you don't really know anything, or refer us to people who do, do you?

None of my ancestors were southerners BTW, and I'm not one either. I've just read a lot since high school, and found that most of that stuff about "Honest Abe" and the Glorious Union that we were taught isn't all there is to learn.

The coming Civil War 2, will be the slaves of the social welfare programs fighting for their masters against the freedom fighters and there will be no north or south but probably city limit lines. Actually, with the administration in power, the whole nation will be shut down. I just wonder if he wants our soldiers out of the wars and at home to do his bidding.

Your comparison to Germany and Japan doesn't fly. Yeah, we bombed the hell out of them because there was no other path to victory short of expending thousands of lives on both sides which were not available to spare.

Then recall what we did afterward-- the Marshall Plan, massive help in rebuilding their countries both materially and socially.

Compare and contrast that to what the North did to the South-- looting carpetbaggers, ruinous taxes and disenfranchisement of all but the lowest level Confederate veterans. Lincoln would have done a much better job of reconstruction than the looters who played the two well-meaning but incompetent administrations which followed him like a fiddle. In some ways the damage done to the south in the 12 years after the war exceeded the damage done during the four years of war and we are still living with the part of that sorry legacy which elevated grievances, revenge and equal results (as defined by our modern carpetbaggers) over forgiveness, individual effort and equal opportunity.

I also went to public school, a Yankee public school. When I really became interested in history, I was much more interested in the Founding Period. This was when the great men lived and acted. It took me a long time to get interested in WBS history; lots of battles, why should I care?

But eventually I realized that the government bequeathed to us by Jefferson, Madison and the boys doesn't really exist anymore. So I went looking to find out how it ended; and it didn't take long to zero in on Saint Lincoln.

He'll want them as far away as possible, if the ones I've spoken with are any indication. Wow!

Should you decide to delve into it further, here is a thread from 2008 where posters from both sides of the debate recommended their favorite Civil War reference books. Since there are literally hundreds of titles in and out of print you may find this "short list" of value.
