Palin Edorsement of New Hampshire Hopeful Draws Ire of Conservative Paper
Politics Daily ^ | July 21, 2010 | Tom Diemer

Posted on 07/21/2010 3:47:17 PM PDT by neverdem

Sarah Palin got some push-back Wednesday, but not from one of her liberal critics in the "mainstream" media. No, it was a conservative -- and influential -- New Hampshire newspaper that tartly dismissed the former Alaska governor's recent endorsement of U.S. Senate candidate Kelly Ayotte.

In a front-page editorial, New Hampshire Union Leader Publisher Joseph W. McQuaid wrote that Palin's endorsement should "neither surprise nor upset the other campaigns" since voters in the state are "rarely impressed by what outsiders have to say."

Better pay attention: in a state that traditionally hosts the first presidential primary -- and will again in 2012 -- the Manchester newspaper wields considerable clout, particularly among Republican voters.

Palin, the 2008 Republican vice presidential candidate, "isn't making these endorsements because, as she claims, she had spent time in New Hampshire and thus knows that the people here are a lot like Alaskans. She spent a few hours here one day during the 2008 presidential election. That's still more time than she spent getting to know Ayotte, but it takes quite a lot longer to know New Hampshire," McQuaid said in the editorial. The publisher called Ayotte a formidable, legitimate contender in a four-person race for the GOP Senate nomination. But he advised other candidates: "Don't fret over what a 'Mama Grizzly' from Alaska does. Right now, Granite Staters have more to worry about in keeping bears away from bird feeders."

In a Facebook posting, Palin praised Ayotte as a "Mama Grizzly" and said she was the "strongest common-sense conservative who can win in the fall."

Ayotte, the former New Hampshire attorney general, is well financed and the front-runner in polls heading into the Sept. 14 Republican Senate primary. Rep. Paul Hodes (D-N.H.) is the likely Democratic nominee in a contest to succeed Sen. Judd Gregg, (R-N.H.), who chose not to seek a fourth term.

Just a matter of curiousity and I may be wrong since I haven’t been following her that closely BUT, I can’t recall Palin endorsing a male candidate when a female candidate was in the race.

"Dede Scozzafava (R) and accountant Doug Hoffman, running on the Conservative Party line, split the GOP vote."

Dede Scozzafava was a major RINO. Palin backed Doug Hoffman.

It was a conservative paper once upon a time, at any rate

secure the border, enforce the laws, and not a clue on what to do with those already here.

She doesn't need to go into detail. Also it would be unwise for her to do so as it would tip her hand to her potential rivals. As long as she supports border security first, she can hash out the rest of the details later. Many illegals will self-deport anyway.

A number of times, Rick Perry over Senator Hutchinson for one, Joe Miller instead of Senator Lisa Murkowski for another off the top off my head.

Hmmm, she and Perry go back a ways so Perry may have been a McPain type endorsement? Murkowski; VERY much a loose cannon no? Thanks for your reply. I wasn't even aware of these two.

Bill Loeb was a top-notch editor and conservative. I wrote several articles for him back in the 70’s.

He was also a friend and advisor to Pres. Teddy Roosevelt (I worked with TR’s granddaughter, a MUL reporter).

I once asked Loeb what were his journalistic policies regarding editorial and letters to the editor pages (the MUL back then used to have up to four full pages of letters, per issue). These are his exact words:

“The editorial page belongs to me. The Letters to the Editor page(s) belongs to the people.”

It can’t get any clearer and better than that.

Hey Bill and Nackey: Miss you, lots.

Perry was the better choice, it was good that we stopped Kay Hutchinson.

She also endorsed the third party Doug Hoffman over the republican woman Dede Scozzafava.

Well, that one wasn't even CLOSE, Scuzzy wasn't even a Pubbie IMHO, but point taken. I suppose what I am trying to figure out is if Palin is into the gender game thing. Seems that if it's even close the female candidate ALWAYS gets the nod from her? I may be barking up the wrong tree here and that's why I asked the question. I'm STILL not completely satisfied she isn't playing the gender card. Conservatives certainly shouldn't have to deal with such nonsense.

Perry was the better choice...

By just about any measure. Still in all he does tend to keep a boot on either side of the fence more often than I'd like.

I like Kelly Ayotte. She is not perfect but she is the most conservative in the race. Her viable opponents, last time I checked are typical liberal Republicans from the NE. I wish there was a better choice but there is not. Bill Binnie especially is really horrible:

Here is the best argument I’ve seen:
http://www.redstate.com/rrreaganite/2010/07/14/kelly-ayotte-is-the-conservative-to-support-in-nh-senate-race/

Now if Palin is really going to do something brave she should endorse Christine O’Donnell in DE.

A REAL conservative doesn't endorse liberal RINOs one day, and conservatives the next. That is called 'inconsistency'.
So, Mr. Self-Righteous, why don't you enlighten the rest of us with a current polician that lives up to your definition of a "REAL" conservative?

I'll check with the PBA (Polician Benevolent Association) and get back to you [snicker]. I'll tell you this: it ain't Sarah Palin.

Sarah Palin: An Intolerable Mistake on Hallowed Ground
http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/2556262/posts
“Earlier today, Mayor Bloomberg responded to my comments about the planned mosque at Ground Zero by suggesting that a decision not to allow the building of a mosque at that sacred place would somehow violate American principles of tolerance and openness.” [snip]

That’s the kind of leadership we need. There is a lot to factor in with her support of various candidates. It gets complicated.

She doesn't need to go into detail. Also it would be unwise for her to do so as it would tip her hand to her potential rivals.

It would also set her apart from the rest of the herd. That's assuming she has a plan for those who are already here to begin with.

As long as she supports border security first, she can hash out the rest of the details later.

Everyone says they support border security. Hell, Obama claims to support border security. Big deal.

Many illegals will self-deport anyway.

They haven't yet.

Debbie Schlussel is a nut case, she is not a source for anything.

Do you even have any idea as to what she's talking about? Arizona only started talking about applying state law to illegal immigrants in the face of federal inaction when one of our former NH state reps and political activists (and retired cop) moved there and jumped into Arizona GOP activism.

In 2005, police in a number of towns brought RSA 635:2 criminal trespass charges against a number of illegal immigrants who were caught breaking other laws - and with whom the immigration authorities couldn't be bothered - on the basis that they were not "licensed or privileged" to "enter or remain in" the United States.

The charge wasn't even a misdemeanor - it was a VIOLATION on the level of a traffic ticket - but Kelly Ayotte slammed the brakes on it by refusing to appeal a court's dismissal of the charge. She then expressly forbade police and local prosecutors to apply the law in this way.

August 24, 2005, NH Union Leader - “Having carefully examined the Court’s decision and the relevant case law, this office has determined that there is an insufficient basis for appeal,” Attorney General Kelly Ayotte wrote in a memo dated Aug. 15. “Accordingly, New Hampshire law enforcement officials should not make future arrests for criminal trespassing based solely on the defendant’s immigration status.”

"Viable opponents?" Don't you remember that Senator Scott Brown started out at single digits in polling against criminal-coddling Democrat Martha Coakley? You'd think that would have finally put to rest this foolish notion of "viability," especially in primaries.
