CBS SHOCK POLL: 74% say Arizona illegal immigration law about right, doesn't go far enough
CBS ^ | 07.14.10

57% of Americans see Arizona’s recent immigration law – which gives police the power to question someone they have already stopped, detained, or arrested about their legal status in the country, and requires people to produce documents verifying their status if asked – as about right, an uptick of five points since May. 23% think the law goes too far, and 17% say it does not go far enough.

It’s shocking that it isn’t closer to 90%.

If all of the people polled had first been given detailed info on what the law REALLY means (instead of what the media and the democrats have misrepresented it to mean)...I have no doubts this number (which is already high) would be much higher.

I was speaking to a young man the other day about this and he (as a hispanic) was against it. Once he found out what it actually says and does...he said "Oh...I agree with that. Why would they say it does something else?" Me and another guy just told him "the media and democrats lie. Period."

Well, you have to allow for the percentage of the population that is either illegal or the parasites that live off the illegals.

I completely support Arizona. But I do have a dumb question to ask --

If I were asked to produce papers showing I was a legal resident, what could I produce? Sure, I could run home and get my birth certificate, but the cop won't wait for that. If I'm a resident alien, I'm supposed to carry a green card, right? So resident aliens who are adhering to the law are all set. But is my driver's license sufficient?

No one would ever think that I'm not a citizen, and I'm not attempting to disingenuously imply that asking for papers is wrong. I completely support asking for papers. I'm just not clear on the mechanics of how I would personally comply.

And the administration keeps pulling out lawsuits in response!

Life can be stranger than fiction........

Tennessee LT. Gov Ron Ramsey who is running for governor is backing such a law for Tennessee.

57% see the law as “about right,” and 17% say it doesn’t go far enough.

That’s 74%

74 % + 17 % = 91 %

Actually, it's the 57% + 17% = 74%.

But a good number nonetheless.

Drivers license.

I don’t think any states grant dl to illegals.

This exact question is probably why the left keeps trying to do that.

Hmmmm why are there MSM polls being put out on this now? Since they are always carrying water for His Obambiness are they trying to warn him away? Or are they trying to bail out Democrats in Congress by warning them against playing the bigot card again? Why publish these polls now?

I know. I see I misunderstood the poll and have already asked the mod to delete my hasty post. :)

It’s only “strange” when viewed from a traditional American point of view, where government governs with the consent of the governed.

Those in power now are operating from a foreign mindset,
and this is the very reason the “natural born citizen” clause was included.

In the time it took to post and then realize that.

100 more illegals ran into Arizona.

When I had to get my driver’s license, and later, when my son got his, we had to produce a birth certificate to get the driver’s licence.

An illegal would not have a US birth certificate.

I guess the answer to the question lies in the procedure for a legal resident to get a DL. If all they have to do is produce a birth certificate, then the DL is not proof of citizenship or legal residence. If they have to provide a “green” card as well, then it is proof. I suppose a little Google search of licensing procedures in all 50 states (or 57, depending on how you count them) would turn up the answer.

I think they should deploy snipers all along the border and pick several of them off that appear to be a threat. Word would travel fast and the border would be secured.
