"Why not vacation down there if they are encouraging others to do so?," asked CBS' Chip Reid.

"I think the key is ... I have friends that email me also from Panama City that they have been down just this past week and have not seen oil, not dealt with oil on the beach and I think sometimes the pictures have led people to believe that oil may be where they were planning on going," White House press secretary Robert Gibbs said.

"I think the First Lady's message is that the Gulf is a beautiful place," Gibbs added.

I have a simpler reason. Middle America vacations at the Gulf. You know those NASCAR loving types from flyover country -- people who actually drive in a car to their destination spot.

Our glorious leaders need to be seen in places like Carmel, and Vail and Martha's Vineyard where the more affluent and erudite elements of society congregate.
