The Obama administration is set today to impose a new ban on deep-water drilling -- this time carefully rewritten in hopes of solving the problems that prompted a federal court to toss out the first attempt.
An administration official confirmed the new moratorium -- likely to come in the form of a "notice to lessees" -- will be issued later today. The new directive is expected to replace NTL No. 4, the May 30 order that imposed the moratorium first announced by President Barack Obama three days earlier.
The administration has lost three bids to preserve the ban in federal courts, where it has so far been successfully challenged by Hornbeck Offshore Services and oil services companies. On June 22, a federal district judge tossed out the moratorium, saying the administration had overreached with a "blanket" ban on all drilling in water depths of at least 500 feet.
Two days later, the same judge rejected the administration's request to reinstate the moratorium while the government appealed the ruling. And on July 8, a three-judge panel of the New Orleans-based 5th Circuit Court of Appeals agreed, also refusing to reinstate the ban in the meantime.
According to a summary of the new order obtained by Hearst Newspapers and the Houston Chronicle, Interior Secretary Ken Salazar's new ban -- technically a suspension of deep-water drilling activities -- would apply until Nov. 30, unless he decides to lift it earlier. The Interior Department is citing its authority under the Outer Continental Shelf Lands Act in imposing the four-month suspension.
In effect, the new suspension is largely a repeat of the May 30 order that halted drilling on 33 deep-water projects in the Gulf of Mexico -- even though it is written with new nuance and detail...

So sad but true
The gulf state governors should tell the govt. to pound sand. What are they going to do? Send out EPA swat teams to shut them down?
I have heard on other sites that the cost is 350 million to build one and that they rent of a million bucks per day so when zero first shut them down my guess is they started plans to move them immediately to all parts of the world.
So I guess that if an airplane crashes any time soon, we’re gonna have to worry about Obama shutting down the airline industry???
Yeah, that makes sense.
According to www.theoildrum.com, which I find reliable, skimmers work with 0.1 inches of oil on the surface; or maybe 0,1 mm. But skimmers are useless for an oil-dispersant mix just under the surface.
If this be so, skimmers are useless. Also from oildrum, an advanced Dutch skimmer can cover 1 square mile per day. If there are 5000 sq. miles, skimming is like peeing in the ocean to raise the tide.
man, that a—hole won’t let it go will he? What’s he hoping, third time’s a charm? I hope the next judge that knocks it down also issues a statement NO MORE ATTEMPTS TO BAN DRILLING!! NO MEANS NO!!!
Which means they are looking for an excuse to ban deep water drilling permanently.
Meanwhile; Petrobras uses $2 billion dollars of American money that 0bama loaned them to drill in 14,000 ft of water.
Like the Arizona racist lawsuit, this, also is beginning to look like he missing some mental faculties.
It Begins First Oil Rig Relocates From Gulf to Foreign Waters"As a result of the uncertainties surrounding the offshore drilling moratorium, we are actively seeking international opportunities to keep our rigs fully employed," Dickerson said. "We greatly regret the loss of U.S. jobs that will result from this rig relocation."
It is not just Gulf operations that are being effected either.
Wait and see for Shell {Shell puts Arctic drilling plans on hold, waiting on feds}
Dirt naps are the only cure for this infestation!
No kidding.
I got a crate of 5.7x28 rounds and as many boxes of .38 special and .45 ACP as I could muster.
The 5.7x28 mm was nice in that it wasn’t nearly as impacted by the ammo-rush/shortage as the others were because it is a less common size.
I honestly think that we are headed for some big trouble; I asked a sheriff today why our state has a law restricting guns from university campuses despite the clear wording of our State Constitution that “No law shall abridge the right of the Citizen to keep and bear arms for security and defense...”
He was of the opinion that the restrictions were *not* the abridgment of the right to keep and bear arms... in retrospect I should have asked “so then, do students living on campus have no right to own a firearm since they *are* living on university grounds?”
The theory of jurisprudence that he embraces would see a single law requiring Jews (or Christians, or Muslims, ...) to wear six-pointed stars on their clothing. And another law saying that no person wearing a six-pointed star may vote. As not violating the section of my/their State Constitution that reads:
Art 2, Sec. 11. [Freedom of religion.]
Every man shall be free to worship God according
to the dictates of his own conscience, and no
person shall ever be molested or denied any
civil or political right or privilege on account
of his religious opinion or mode of religious
worship. No person shall be required to attend
any place of worship or support any religious
sect or denomination; nor shall any preference
be given by law to any religious denomination
or mode of worship.
I am looking forward to the multiple studies that will be done on the adverse economic effects of this ban/moritorium .... this lamearse Jack Squat administration days are numbered.
” “Petrobas/Soros Enrichment Act”. “
Good name for it, seeing as that is what it is.
It was always coming down to the people enforcing the rule of law. It’s going to be a wild, memorable ride, folks.
