JERUSALEM—Iran has sent Syria a sophisticated radar system that could threaten Israel's ability to launch a surprise attack against Iran's nuclear facilities, say Israeli and U.S. officials, extending an alliance aimed at undermining Israel's military dominance in the region.

The radar could bolster Syria's defenses by providing early warning of Israeli air-force sorties. It could also benefit Hezbollah, the Iran-backed militant group based in Lebanon and widely believed to receive arms from Syria.

Though officials say the transaction took place about a year ago, Israel and the U.S. haven't publicized it

Does this mean the regime has figured out that the olive branch didn't work? Both sides of their strategy have failed. Iran has not backed down, nor have the Chinese and Russians come on board for strict sanctions. Check and mate to the wizards of smart in the White House.

I'm not so sure about this, the Iranian radars are not up to standards, so why would Syria accept it?

Such a deal would be a violation of a 2007 United Nations Security Council resolution that forbids Iran from transferring, selling, or supplying arms or related material. according to http://www.haaretz.com/news/diplomacy-defense/iran-supplied-syria-with-radar-system-to-thwart-surprise-israel-attack-1.299350

This might be a non-event.

“The mid-2009 transfer was described in recent months by two Israeli officials, two U.S. officials and a Western intelligence source, and confirmed Wednesday by the Israeli military.”

Doesn’t sound like a non-event.

It is a non-event as the radar system is unsophisticated.

It’s an event in that it penetrates deeply into Israeli airspace and serves as an early warning system.

But there is so much traffic in Israel, not sure how helpful it would be.
