After meeting with President Obama, Republican senators said there's a path for a bipartisan clean-energy bill this year, but the major fault line remains as Democrats said they still want any legislation to set strict controls on greenhouse gas emissions.
The Republicans said they were willing to work with Democrats on a scaled-down bill that would boost energy research and development and emphasize nuclear power so long as the majority took the idea of a carbon-pricing scheme -- which they have dubbed a "national energy tax" -- off the table.
"As long as we take a national energy tax off the table, there's no reason we can't have clean-energy legislation," Senate Republican Conference Chairman Lamar Alexander told reporters.
Sen. Judd Gregg, New Hampshire Republican, said the meeting was "excellent" and that there was more common ground than disagreement.

They're even willing to give up cap and tax.
They will, count on it. Even worse is they’ll do this so the media writes nice things about them. Its not for the country but for person and party. Both parties are WORTHLESS to the core!

Take the catafalque and turn it upside down so it looks like a pig’s trough. Place Byrd’s casket in it. Then it’ll be a fitting memorial for a man who viewed any federal dollar not spent in West Virginia as wasted money.
Nuclear power is something the GOP has called for for a long time. Not sure this would be caving.
I believe they'd like to get a scaled down cap and tax to get their foot in the door and and greatly increase it later. I just hope the Repubs don't go for it.
There are no Greenhouse Gasses! Any Repub who tries to say there is needs to show us the proof and then get voted out.

I agree with you that any cap and tax should be a no-go.
However, I think it's interesting that the Dems seem apparently willing to entertain dropping it completely from the bill.
Maybe...depends on how desperate the Dems are to get something passed.
It still has to be merged with the House bill, which has cap and tax. Then they'll end up getting most of what they want anyway thanks to GOP support. And here I made the mistake of believing that we actually had two parties in this country.
Republicans have to know that the DEMS will screw them the first chance they get. All the Dems are doing is looking for a crack in the wall. Republicans have to be the dumbest animals in the world!!...........and I’m a Republican.
Well I didn’t read in the article that the Dems were willing to drop it completely from the bill. Kerry and Lieberman are willing to scale it back but it was said Obama was firm when it came to putting a price on greenhouse gas emissions.
