Owner: Arizona boycott causes local layoffs
Orange County Register (CA) ^ | June 29, 2010 | by Jan Norman

“California politicians calling for boycotts of Arizona need to realize that the boycott will hurt California businesses and workers,” says Huntington Beach resident George Saffarrans who owns Rogers Poultry.

Saffarrans is the third generation owner of a family business founded in 1927. He employs about 200 people, mostly Hispanic, “U.S. citizens and legal immigrants; we’re a union company, and my guys are union workers,” he emphasizes.

The company ships poultry products to Phoenix six days a week, according to its website. Orders placed before 3 p.m. will be delivered the next day.

“If I lose 5% of my business, that’s two or three guys I’ll have to lay off,” Saffarrans says. “Here’s what boycotting Arizona means to me: I sell less product, make less revenue, pay less business taxes and may have to lay off some workers who are, in fact, legal immigrants.

Ask George one simple question.

"Who did you vote for?"

End of conversation.

Well there's your problem. You should have hired illegal immigrants, then the Dems would like you.

So George, what’s stopping you from shipping to Arizona?

Just because the azzhats in government voted for a boycott, doesn’t mean you have to join them.

George, if you voted for the ones now in support of the boycott, well, then, you get what you vote-for!

He employs about 200 people

“If I lose 5% of my business, that’s two or three guys I’ll have to lay off,”

So... if you lose 50% of your business, that's 20 or 30 you lay off.

And if you lose 100% of your business, that's 40 or 60 you lay off.

Leaving 140 people working.

At something......

Indeed - I thought the boycotts were supposed to encourage people from buying products from Arizona (except electricity and traffic light camera services, it seems), not to keep people from selling products to Arizona. In fact, I think that a selling boycott based on geography violates the Interstate Commerce Clause.

I don't think George is suggesting that the boycott prevents him from selling to Arizona. I think he is acknowledging (and trying to get the economic idiots in California to recognize) that if the boycott has a negative impact on the business environment in Arizona like they hope it does, then the consumers in Arizona will buy less product from businesses in California (like his). It is actually a pretty OBVIOUS observation that people should be able to understand but don't. Or maybe people in Arizona will just happily continue to send their money to the azzhats in California that are trying to bully them out of business, but somehow I think the Arizonans are smarter than that.

George doesn't appear to be saying that he has to join the boycott, but rather appears to acknowledge (and explain to the economic idiots in California to recognize) that if the boycott has a negative impact on the business environment in Arizona like they hope it does, then the consumers in Arizona will buy less product from businesses in California (like his). It is actually a pretty OBVIOUS observation that people should be able to understand but don't.

George doesn't really explain his rationale. I can certainly see a counter-boycott, even an unorganized one, where people in Arizona stick it back in California's face. To me, it's the obvious reaction. But it remains a mystery as to whether George sees this truth, or if he's dumb enough to think that the local politicians are forbidding him from selling to Arizona. After all, he's dumb enough to proudly operate a union shop.

I just posted this on the OCRegister website under BillyBobNC:

BillyBobNC says: June 29, 2010 at 6:55 am

Thank you for the heads up Mr. Saffarrans. North Carolina has a thriving poultry business.

And, I will be making some of those local (NC) businesses aware of the new business OPPORTUNITY that has just opened up in Arizona.

Sorry for your loss Mr. Saffarrans/California, but THANK YOU for the new business.

Business is like water flowing downhill...it's gonna happen with or without you.

His only political contribution listed on Open Secrets is $500 to Carly Fioria.
