Feb. 2009: Sen. Robert Byrd doffs his hat for reporters as he arrives at the Capitol in Washington.
Senator Robert Byrd of West Virginia, the longest-serving senator in American history, died Monday at the age of 92, a spokesman for the family said.
Byrd, a Democrat who served in the U.S. Senate since 1959, had been plagued by health problems in recent years and was confined to a wheelchair. He had skipped several votes in Congress in the past months.
Jesse Jacobs, a family spokesman, said Byrd died peacefully at about 3 a.m. at Inova Hospital in Fairfax, Va.
He was the oldest member of the 111th Congress.
The passing of Sen. Byrd will not affect the balance of power in the Senate. West Virginia Governor Joe Manchin, a Democrat, will appoint a replacement senator to serve out the remainder of Byrd's term which ends in 2012.
That would be 158, and you’re right. I don’t. ;^)
Take care...
Let’s keep this ball rolling, Democrats! Leftist obituaries make great toilet literature.
It’s down to these people, or my country. What do you expect me to feel about them? These aren’t Americans. F’em!
The Robert C. Byrd Memorial Obituary.
“... surely he had people in his life that loved him and they are mourning for him now ...”
Well said. Good prayer, too.
He was the last Senator to get away scot free with using the N-word on television. May he meet his judgement day greeted by a group of black men in hooded robes with a bull whip and a noose.
Now contrast that with the Late Sen. Strom Thurmond, at his funeral even some of his closest Senate Colleagues would not attend because of his so called past and he was treated disrespectfully. Yet from all accounts he gave a lot of Blacks starts on his staff and helped a lot them along in their political and/or government careers. Did Byrd do anything of the same??????
Thurmond did change, beginning in the '60s. We have no clue about Byrd.
May he rest in sheets, er . . . peace.
Agreed on this.
Byrd we don’t really know anything about and what he did or not do.
I have just heard that there is a Democrat resolution for Byrd to lie in State. That I don’t agree with.
There’ll never be another one like him. Hopefully.
Seriously, I hope Senator Byrd rests in peace and I wish his family the best in their time of grief.
and nature again imposes her own term limits.....memo to nature....Lautenberg...
Lest anyone think that something good is going to come from this, Byrd consistently voted against amnesty in 2007.
I would not be surprised if Dems start pushing amnesty again, fearing that they have to do as much damage as possible this year.
They already are pushing amnesty. If nothing else, it will happen after the 2010 elections.
And they won’t worry about American public opinion.
The Mexicans and terrorists will be the ones to decide.
Then it will be up to we the people to stop it, as the Republicans in the House& Senate will just watch & snivel.
Look, I just mean in the immediate wake...I remember when the horrible Swimmer passed. Nothing is gained in the first few days after a person dies by naysaying them.
Of course I do not think history should be whitewashed.
Yes indeed, American “public opinion” is so weak and tentative that it means nothing!
You’re right about Byrd being against amnesty. In fact there are a couple more things he voted more conservatively than John McCain did. He also endorsed Bush on Larry King.
When Obama came up with this immigration reform crap a few months ago because he promised the Hispanic caucus he would in return for the critical (final House) Obama-care vote; the Dems in congress told him it was not possible to even get a decent vote. Their taste for suicide votes is long gone.
The plan is to try to pass stuff after the election before the new congress.
...And the governor is a Democrat, ergo, he's a corrupt scumbag.
So we already know how this will play out. Case closed.
