Feb. 2009: Sen. Robert Byrd doffs his hat for reporters as he arrives at the Capitol in Washington.
Senator Robert Byrd of West Virginia, the longest-serving senator in American history, died Monday at the age of 92, a spokesman for the family said.
Byrd, a Democrat who served in the U.S. Senate since 1959, had been plagued by health problems in recent years and was confined to a wheelchair. He had skipped several votes in Congress in the past months.
Jesse Jacobs, a family spokesman, said Byrd died peacefully at about 3 a.m. at Inova Hospital in Fairfax, Va.
He was the oldest member of the 111th Congress.
The passing of Sen. Byrd will not affect the balance of power in the Senate. West Virginia Governor Joe Manchin, a Democrat, will appoint a replacement senator to serve out the remainder of Byrd's term which ends in 2012.
seems the DemocRATS like to use that term for Sarah Palin, our next President...
The late Sen.Bryd is a prime example of ‘TERM LIMITS’
I feel its been at least five years since Bryd functioned mentally.
Let us all ‘wake up’ and vote these old timers OUT....
Where is it that you get thsi vision of the Creator? What is your source of knowledge about him that leads you to this conclusion?
Personally I think it’s time to just do a complete sweep-out of both houses of congress. I won’t miss either Byrd or Kennedy.
Not so fast, other wonks have been on and are not sure or are saying the opposite.
The problem I see is the "declare" date.
Byrd is dead as a doornail, but it may not stop the Gov. from not declaring until 07/04.
My guess is he is a fool if he goes for that kind of monkey business people would be pissed.....
I am waiting an hoping Judge Napalitano chimes in....

That’s the one! Thanks!
Guilty but staying put.
UGH
Only God knows whether Byrd was evil or not as only God knows his heart. Having said that, his actions and votes are what we will judge him by.
God creates everything good and creates nothing which is bad. Our free will is what causes mistakes. God has nothing to do with those.
Byrd is the man he himself intended to be, not God.
depends on what "people" you mean. Those of us outside of WV or those inside who elected him to 9 terms.
For reasons I don't know nor understand the people of WV have elected a Democrat repeatedly to that seat and have elected a Democrat as governor. They may very well be just fine with an appointment.
Dirty politics are the norm for that political party these days. They do as THEY please, not the people anyway.
Of course, God created him, and naturally God didn’t make a mistake. But, He gave man a free will. He did not make Byrd do the things he did. So the mistakes of this man I am not blaming on God, and I don’t think God intended for him to behave as he did. I believe Byrd used his free will to cause discord, and angry feelings, and hide truths through most of his life. And it was his free will that hurt many and this country. I usually do not say anything bad about a person at their time of passing, and I am trying to be a bit tactful. However, I cannot be hypocritical and pretend he deserves admiration. I hope his family has peaceful closure, they are not to blame for the things that were anything but good for this country that this man supported and advocated. Period.
Her name was Nancy LaFon. You must be thinking of this LaFonda:
"It sure is hot in here."
"It's hot; but it's a dry heat."
**I wonder what he is talking to ol’ Ted Kennedy with, right about now?**
That is, provided they are in the same place. LOL!
Do you have any proof or at least a link to a site we can read about the rule of law in this case?
Agreed. He hardly rated the vitriol we reserve here for the real bad guys.
On the opposing team no doubt.
I often wonder how folks like him who were social conservatives in the first half of their lives when almost everyone was got so disjointed.
or did they just acede to the trend?
He could easily have gone GOP I would think and held power or was there something about West Virginia where a white social conservative could not easily slide to the GOP 40 years ago like a Dixiecrat in Mississippi or Alabama could?
Aw, c’mon. We didn’t suffer Teddy to go out with little rancor. Some people deserve rancor. The man was a sheet-wearing klansman. That alone deserves mockery.
Everything over two stories.
