'Acrobatic and mean-spirited' raccoon knocks out power in downtown Memphis

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) — A raccoon described by a Memphis utility official as "very acrobatic and mean-spirited" short-circuited a switch and knocked out power downtown for more than five hours.

Memphis Light, Gas and Water Division president Jerry Collins told The Commercial Appeal that about 8,000 customers were without city power late Thursday and early Friday.

Emergency generators restored power to the Regional Medical Center at Memphis and Le Bonheur Children's Hospital within seconds, but the outage delayed production of Friday's newspaper at The Commercial Appeal and disrupted other businesses.

Collins said the utility has installed barriers to keep animals out, but this raccoon climbed 30 feet to get to the equipment. He said the raccoon is "not with us anymore."

"...very acrobatic and mean-spirited..."

That statement shows prejudice and bias towards raccoons. I'm sure the commenter had never before met this specific raccoon and is therefore not in a position to judge its demeanor prior to the event. The procylon lotor was probably just curious and not mean-spirited.

This wholesale bias and discrimination towards raccoons needs to cease before the poor little creatures are hounded out of the neighborhoods and are forced to survive in the wild./s+

Reminds me of that old Ray Stevens song ...

The day the squirrel went berserk
In the First Self-Righteous Church
In that sleepy little town of Pascagoula (Pascagoula)!
It was a fight for survival
That broke out in revival
They were jumpin’ pews and shoutin’ Hallelujah! Hallelujah!

. . .the outage delayed production of Friday's newspaper at the Commercial Appeal . . .

According to Wikipedia, "Like most market-dominant daily papers, the Commercial Appeal is a seven-day morning paper. It generally takes a liberal point of view regarding editorial positions."

Let's give it up for that heroic little raccoon.

"very acrobatic and mean-spirited"

And probably racist, to boot...

The ‘Coon was only knocking out power to prevent the rapist conspiracy (led by the mayor, natch) from coming to fruition.

You may be right. The Frisco Coons sign had to come off the watertower there because that was racist. Seems like you get in trouble if you try to say anything nice about coons these days.
