PRETORIA, South Africa Landon Donovan scored in the first minute of stoppage time off a rebound, advancing the United States to the second round at the World Cup with a 1-0 win over Algeria.
With the U.S. perhaps three minutes from elimination, Jozy Altidore was stopped on a breakaway by goalkeeper Rais Bolihi. Donovan hustled in and kicked in the rebound to win Group C Wednesday.

I think I’d rather play either Ghana or German than Serbia. I’m not wild about facing Serbia.
Congrats to Donovan and the rest of the boys. Great run.
I don’t see anyone “pushing” anything on me, and if they did I wouldn’t pay any attention to it. Why the insecurity?
No, you’ll like it. In the Round of 16, each squad has to play against an opposing team of 11 rabid pit bulls.
What a game!!!!!
It is going to be a great atmosphere by having the WC in Brazil!
I was actually forced to play at the private school I went to. It was either that or step aerobics for my PE credit. Soccer was slightly less gay so that’s what I went with.
Exactly. The older generations are dying off; to be replaced by generations raised on soccer. It is inevitable. Personally, I loathe soccer, but I am part of that 'older generation'...by the time soccer becomes popular in America; I'll be dead.
AMERICA NEEDS SOMETHING TO CHEER ABOUT!!!!....that’s the whole story.....we NEEDED this today....
As a former teacher and coach of soccer at the high school level I root for Mexico and the USA at the world cup.
Of course the team (many latinos) support Mexico but they know where I stand in a USA Mexico match. WELL DONE BOYS.
Good luck in the round of 16.
Heck, my ancestors came from Poland 150 years ago, but you can bet if Poland ever made the Final, I'm painting my face in Red and White (unless it's against the USA, in which case I add the blue).
In Mexico 1986 and USA 1994 the games were played during the day for European prime time consumption. The audience and money is still much bigger in Europe for the World Cup though things may change.
What the USA is lacking, is home-grown superstars. But Howard and Donovan may be changing that.
Why would you seek out a thread on soccer just for the purposes of posting in that thread how much you hate soccer?
What is the point of commenting like that? It's not like you didn't know what the thread was about when you clicked on it. You boys need to grow up.
Jeez..... does someone pee in your cornflakes everyday or something?
Lighten up manno, the US deserves some freakin GOOD news at least once a day.
Howard is da man. Donovan put this team on his back the last two matches
But also the UEFA Champions League is starting to get much more attention here in the US. The Final Match was on broadcast TV in the US for the first time ever. And the EPL also has a large following here. Now if only Everton can get Landon Donovan back, they would become "America's Team" with Tim Howard in goal.
It was Breaking News I sought, not soccer.
