ORLANDO -- Is it too soon to name a road after President Barack Obama? A new road being built through Orlando will have his name.
Roads in Orlando honor some of our greatest presidents, from Washington to Jefferson and now Obama.
On Friday, Orlando leaders made President Barack Obama Parkway the first road under construction in the nation named after our 44th president, and surely one of the few in history to be named after a sitting president in his first term.
"I think its great if people want to support their presidential candidate, but I think it's a little soon," said Orlando resident Karey Graham.
"You don't have to be dead to be honored," said Charles Sledge from Orlando. We need to honor people while they are living."
City leaders actually voted on the name shortly after the groundbreaking election, when they decided they wanted to break ground on a north-south connection from Conroy Road to Old Winter Garden Road.
While some might find the name controversial, Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer said the benefits of the road are undeniable.
"Building these reliever roads is important for people being able to get to work or home and being able to save 10 minutes they can spend with their families. In this particular area John Young (Parkway), Kirkman (Road), I-4 always have congestion," Dyer said.
With the lack of north-south roads, people turn to these residential neighborhoods, sometimes causing even more problems. Two hundred jobs will be created to build the first $10.5 million phase of the road, which will connect with Metrowest Boulevard.
As for the timetable on the rest of the construction, and what will spring up around the new road, it's still about as uncertain as the legacy the Obama Administration will leave behind.
However, Commissioner Samuel Ings, who came up with the name for the road, knows what he'd like to see.
"One of my dreams would be when we get ready to cut the ribbon that our president, presidential limo and seal would be the first to travel along Presidential Barack Obama Parkway," Ings said.
So far Obama hasn't been contacted.
Unfortunately, almost everyone of those roads, opened with great fan fare and promises, have turn into slums. Closed stores, empty malls, and homes with “security bars” on them are the rule rather than the exception.
In short, rhetoric doesn't bring improvement.
As for roads honoring BHO1 (that's right I called him a king) I have to wonder what they will look like in 5 years - much less twenty.
I was going to point that out. It’s not exactly in a good neighborhood. And it really won’t take the pressure off Kirkman Rd.
I would have no problem if they renamed Orange Blossom Trail in Orlando, better know as OBT, which is famous for it’s prostitution, drug dealing, and every other crime you can think of to BOT, Barack Obama Trail. OBT to BOT.
Yes. Orlando now has the usual big city political pathologies and interest groups that hang about like sucker fish: strong, predatory public employee unions; politically energetic Black, Hispanic and gay communities; and a bloated City budget, presided over by crooks, incompetents, and Leftists, allied with business interests hungry for favors and patronage at public expense.
Wha the H is wrong with orlando? That’s where the kook to end all kooks grayson is from.
... with only left turns.
Shoplifters from Crime Hills though will have a quicker commute to the upscale Mall at Millenia.
Grayson picked off a weak Republican incumbent in 2008. Grayson also benefited from rising numbers of non-Cuban Hispanics in the area.
The Road To Nowhere.
NOT The High Road.
The Road To Serfdom. (No offense intended toward Friedrich von Hayek)
The Road To Perdition.
The Road To Ruin.
Definitely NOT The Road To El Dorado.
A road, that like its namesake, leads to nowhere.
Affirmative Action Alley....has a certain ring to it.
Looking at the map it appears to be an expressway that’s going to give the thugs and bangers in Pine Hills much better access to the rich tourists down at the Mall at Millenia.
Is that Michelle’s?
IDIOTS!
Black top with white stripes
Most new roads built around Orlando come with TOLL BOOTHS.
But where are they gonna find that much tar to pave the road?
It’s common user name will be the Highway to Hell.........
Highway to Hell!
