Elton John 'a Little Surprised' at Rush Limbaugh Wedding Invite
PEOPLE ^ | Tuesday June 15, 2010 03:15 PM EDT | Jeffrey Slonim

Add Elton John to those who were not expecting him to get an invite to Rush Limbaugh's wedding.

"To put it in Elton's exact words, when he got the invitation, he was 'a little surprised,' " his partner David Furnish told PEOPLE on Sunday at the Tony Awards in New York. "And then, when it turned out to be a genuinely sincere invitation … Elton said, 'Life is about building bridges, not walls.' "

John also saw it as another opportunity, in his words, "to go where people wouldn't expect me to go."

"And maybe if I can make a great impression," Furnish quoted him as saying, "people might change their perspectives on life."

Furnish was in Europe and couldn't attend the wedding. But John told him it was a beautiful event and Limbaugh and his bride "were incredibly gracious and very welcoming and very sweet and very appreciative."

"Elton, during the performance made a lot of cracks: 'I suppose you all wonder why I'm here tonight?' " says Furnish. "But ultimately, it's a bit like an olive branch, I guess."

By all accounts, John and the couple got along well. "I wasn't there, but from everything Elton told me, he said Rush and his bride were incredibly charming and welcoming. And they have said they want to come and have dinner with us in England, if they pass through in their travels."

The tentative offer was welcomed. "We have to bring the world together, not apart," said Furnish, who produced Next Fall with Sir Elton on Broadway.

My husband just reconnected with a good friend of his from high school on Facebook.

Turns out the friend is gay. No one suspected it 30 years ago.

I’ve had several friends who everyone else knew were gay before they did.

Many of us have gay friends (whether we know it or not)...

I'd rather not know. I'd rather not have it shoved in my face. I'd rather an esteemed person, reject rebrobate, depraved behavior, instead of paying $1,000,000 to them to "perform", whereby allowing THAT $1,000,000 to be directed toward causes that further erode (I'm not sure where the bottom is, but I'm pretty confident that we're almost there) biblical principles.

but hey, that's just me.

Hey, Rush is big time. A member of the elite. Anyone who criticizes him for this is just a plebian loser.

That's what this is about, right?

Rush can talk about whatever he wants as far as I’m concerned....that man single-handedly destroyed the Obama Administration. The LONE VOICE in the media who brought the KING down to a PAWN.

Elton said, 'Life is about building bridges, not walls.'

Funny, but I always thought Elton was more of a tunnel guy myself...

I said many, not most or all or us. I should have included acquaintances and coworkers in that statement.

“I said many, not most or all or us. I should have included acquaintances and coworkers in that statement.”

Oh. Then, you are probably right.

Both men proved they can accept others without judging. And, since I think this is still a Christian nation, that is just alright with me.

I’ve had several friends who everyone else knew were gay before they did.

Yeah, those kinds of things turn into self-fulfilling prophecies in my experience. That is, a guy acts gentle and soft-spoken and every woman in his life tries to convince him he's a homosexual. At some point, he starts to believe it. I've seen it happen.

Such women should keep their stinkin' traps shut.

“And, since I think this is still a Christian nation, that is just alright with me.”

I have no problem with Rush, or anyone, having a gay friend....in fact it is positive to continue the bonds of friendship.... On the other hand, it is NOT judging to say that homosexuality is not normal or moral.

One is not judgemental if they say that sin is sin.

John the Baptist was said by Jesus to be the most blessed man to ever live beside himself...John the Baptist got his head cut off for pointing out the sins of the leaders...I suppose they thought he was being judgemental.

And in any event, if 5% of the popoulation is gay, you only need 20 friends to be likely to have a gay friend...

This is our philosophy for the most part. A close relative ‘came out’ and has a partner. It was difficult at first and caused tons of family tension and strife. Lots of drama, especially at holidays.

Our perspective is that we do not condone the lifestyle, do not celebrate it. We politely decline certain events they invite us to. We are always polite and cordial to them. I don’t really see the point in being rude or ugly to them; it only gives conservatives and Christians a bad name and perpetuates stereotypes.

“Pet peeve # 234....You do not send someone an invite, you send them an invitation. Invite is the verb.”

I presume you are not aware of differences in accepted common usage of English between Britain and America?

Elton is an entertainer who loves money and since his music has been pretty dead lately he had to go where the money lead him. If he was an artist he would still be making good songs.

<><><><><><

Elton John is, at the same time (oh my God!!!), both an entertainer and an artist. They are not mutually exclusive terms.

He entertains with his art.

I haven’t cared much for his art since the early 70s (Tumbleweed Connect and Madman Across the Water), but that’s just me.
