Is Etheridge In Trouble?
Real Clear Politics ^ | 6/15/10 | Sean Trende

Posted on 06/15/2010 6:24:11 AM PDT by DM1

...... So how vulnerable does this make Etheridge? We at RealClearPolitics currently have the race rated as Likely Democrat. ....

Etheridge is also doing well in the fundraising race. According the the FEC he has over $1 million cash on hand; his opponent, Renee Ellmers, has $5,462. In addition, Ellmers isn't exactly a typical high-quality candidate: She's a nurse and county Chamber of Commerce President.

But there are some countervailing pressures on Etheridge. Ellmers will almost certainly improve her fundraising based upon this viral video, and may be able to put together a more competitive race.

More to the point, Etheridge has generally thrived in the district by compiling a centrist voting record. This has placed him more in line with the state Democrats, who perform well in the district, than with the national Democrats, whose track record is more problematic.

This time around, however, Etheridge has generally voted the national Democratic line. He voted for the stimulus package, for "cap and trade" legislation, and for the healthcare bill (which one pollster found only 37% of Etheridge's constituents favored and 53% opposed). This was probably prompted in part by the weakness of his opponent. But if the cash flows into Ellmers' coffers, this could prove to be a miscalculation on Etheridge's part.

The district's fundamentals and Etheridge's fundraising advantage still give him a significant advantage in the fall. But now there is a pretty clear scenario to see how he loses. This really was somewhere in between "safe" and "likely" Democrat before; it is now probably somewhere between "likely" and "leans" Democrat. Hopefully we'll get some polling soon to better sort this out; if not, we'll have some updated financial information in about a month.

See second :24-25 in the vid. He grabbed the kid’s phone. At the end of the vid, he walked off with it. That’s theft and potentially, identity theft, intimidation, harrassment and a whole host of other offsenses.

"I guess that means she's not a professional pol."

And she's not a lawyer, either. With today's voter attitudes, those could be big plusses...

That jumped out at me too. Somehow a nurse, a female and a Chamber of Commerce President isn’t a typical high-quality candidate - in their eyes. But a drunken politician is?? LOL

She looks like a high value candidate to me since she is not a lawyer. I hope she gets funded and takes it to him.

No. He is a Democrat. If he happened to be a Republican, then that is a horse of a different color. All the alphabet media organizations would be running continous stories on it 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

I emailed the author about that particular phrase. I’ll be interested in his comments...if he comments at all.

IMO, he has simply adapted what works under obamanation’s rules: the Black Panther mode. It worked well for them during their trial, so why won’t it work for whitey? Why not bully and shove those you don’t like out of the way. in obamanation’s world, that is encouraged...”....bring guns to knife fight”....

I’ll say it again:
If Congress refuses to severely punish Ethridge, it simply means they CONDONE violent confrontations between the elected and the electorate......
If this fool doesn’t drop out, he SHOULD be made the poster boy for what’s wrong with the Dem’s being in control...

I think your post jumps to conclusions. The words the article used are common code. They do mean basically what you agree with me they do, but that still doesn’t mean I think Renee shouldn’t be the next Rep from NC-02 because I very much support her and have contributed to her campaign. I fully despise Bob Etheridge and think his position of Grand Orator in NC AF&AM should be taken away from him for defaming Masonry in public. What he did is not what Masons do anywhere.

Does this help clarify the situation for you? :)

the irony here is that Etheridge was going to run against Burr for the Senate seat but chickened out and decided to keep his “safe seat” in congress. Now would it be Karma if that “safe seat” isn't safe.

If a poll comes out showing him in a close race I think Bob will resign like Obey instead of fight.

A Palin endorsement now would do wonders for Renee's chances. Palin is much loved around these parts as her visit to Ft. Bragg, her NRA speech in Charlotte and her2008 campaign events among other things show.

You are absolutely correct. There are some apparatchiks who still say the boilerplate in Etheridge’s favor, and the district really is tailor-made to support a statist candidate, but the question will be whether he can muster the government clients’ attention long enough to get them to vote. He’ll have to go ugly to win and if Renee remains as bright and gentle as she has begun, his ugliness will likely backfire and give her more good exposure than she could get on her own.
